Apple continues to work on its own smart glasses. According to information gleaned by Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, the project is being discussed internally under the code name N50. According to the source, "this device is not ready yet".
Apple takes on Meta's Ray-Ban
The Cupertino giant aims to design smart glasses that rely entirely on Apple Intelligence, the suite of AI-powered tools integrated into the iPhone. The accessory will primarily leverage Visual Intelligence, the AI feature that allows the user to obtain contextual information in real time by simply pointing their iPhone camera at an object or location. Highly effective, it transforms the iPhone into an assistant or tour guide.
In other words, Apple is looking to offer an alternative to Meta's connected Ray-Ban glasses. Powered by Meta's generative AI, the glasses are capable of seeing and interpreting everything the wearer sees with their own eyes. The Ray-Ban can thus respond to questions about the user's immediate environment. The icing on the cake is that they can instantly translate English, Italian, Spanish, and even French, thus reducing the language barrier.
As expected, Apple is expected to go all out on artificial intelligence. Unlike its rival, Apple could forgo a flagship feature of smart glasses: recording videos and taking photos. For privacy reasons, Apple would not allow photos to be taken with the glasses, although sensors will be integrated into the temples to support Apple Intelligence. For the moment, the company has not yet made a firm decision on the matter.
AR glasses in the pipeline
According to the latest news, Apple is expected to release its first pair of smart glasses sometime in 2027. At the same time, the brand continues to develop glasses dedicated to augmented reality. Equipped with screens fixed in front of the wearer's eyes, the glasses will display contextual information as needed. They are expected in several years and should be fully autonomous.
Here again, Apple risks falling behind Meta. The Menlo Park giant plans to launch a pair of augmented reality glasses sometime this October, according to Mark Gurman. The glasses will allow users to interact with AR applications and review photos they've already taken via screens. Meta is currently working hard to make the accessory available this fall. More expensive than Ray-Bans, Meta's AR glasses will come with a wristband that can recognize the user's hand movements.
