This Saturday, April 12 is a day of celebration for Doctor Who aficionados. The British science fiction series is making its grand return to the BBC in the UK and on Disney+ worldwide. These new episodes will form the second season of the third series, which turns out to be a second reboot. Have we lost you? It's true that the structure of Doctor Who has all the hallmarks of a “& ... But if you're here, it's because you've been following this program for a long time, or its arrival on Disney+ has motivated you to join the club.
But it doesn't matter what your relationship with Doctor Who is, because all future viewers of season 2 are going to need a refresher. Indeed, the new batch of episodes is about to introduce a new key character, Belinda Chandra, who will now accompany the Doctor in his TARDIS... against her own will. But this reluctance – although important in the comic dynamic between the Time Lord and his new partner – is not an element that will have to be dwelled on, contrary to what the trailers try to make us believe. If the face of the new protagonist seems familiar to you, this is the clue you will have to dig to begin to understand the mysteries of the next season.
An extraordinary human
The beginnings of season 2 could not be simpler. After being captured by robots, then saved by the Doctor, Belinda seeks at all costs to find the calm of her life on Earth. But while the Time Lord tries to answer At his request, the TARDIS suddenly finds itself unable to land on the day in May 2025 when Belinda left Earth. And if the Doctor can't correct this problem: it's because mysterious forces are trying to prevent him. Belinda therefore has no choice but to travel through space and time in the hope of finding her home.
But why would anyone want to lock a mere human out of her time frame? Simply because Belinda Chandra is not just anyone. If you hadn't noticed yet, actress Varada Sethu already appeared in the previous season and lent her features to the characters of Mundy Flynn in the episode titled "Boom!". This is not an easy task casting (after all, Karen Gillan and Peter Capaldi had already appeared in the series before landing their lead roles) but rather a connection of the utmost importance.
Varada Sethu has already confirmed that there is a "genetic connection" of several thousand years between these two characters. But is that enough to explain their identical appearance? This link between Belinda Chandra and Mundy Flynn is certainly at the origin of the mystery surrounding season 2. We will therefore have to keep a close eye on the new protagonist to try to discover some answers. But one thing is certain: Belinda already promises to be one of the Doctor's most memorable partners, based on this new and promising storyline alone.
