Free technical inspection: Volkswagen is giving motorists a nice gift

French motorists can breathe a little easier. Until May 3, Volkswagen is offering free MOTs to owners of its vehicles, as well as those of Seat, Cupra, and Skoda. This initiative comes at a great time at a time when car maintenance bills are soaring. According to current rates, this helping hand represents a saving of around €80, with no compensation or obligation to carry out any work.

A welcome boost for the wallet

The offer is simple: if your car's MOT is due within six months of To come, you can benefit from it by making an appointment with an authorized VW Group repairer. These garages carry out a preliminary inspection, then take care of presenting the vehicle to an authorized technical inspection center. And if the vehicle fails? A quote will be offered, but you remain free to have the repairs done wherever you want - or not at all.

All models of the Volkswagen brand are affected: Golf, Polo, T-Cross, Tiguan and others. The only notable exception: Audi, also a member of the Volkswagen Group, does not participate in the operation.

To take advantage of this offer, there's no need to dig into the fine print. All you need to do is have your vehicle's next technical inspection due before November 3, 2025 (i.e., within 6 months of the offer ending), and have the appointment made between March 3 and May 3, 2025. The official Volkswagen website provides a dedicated page, as well as a list of participating garages.

The operation has been designed as a way to build driver loyalty while ensuring better road safety. "Rest assured, our experts are here to support you," the brand says in its press release. It's also a way to bring customers back to dealerships without having to dangle a more aggressive marketing carrot.

Useful reminder: technical inspections are mandatory in France. They must be carried out within six months before the vehicle's fourth anniversary, and then every two years. Driving without one is punishable by a fine of €135. So it's better to plan ahead, especially when it's free.

By focusing on a free, visible, and useful service, Volkswagen is enhancing its image while attracting potentially loyal customers. Car maintenance is often a chore that drivers put off; this rather attractive offer transforms this constraint into an opportunity. For participating garages, it's also a good way to generate traffic and, potentially, additional services.
