Gemini surpasses 350 million users, but remains far behind ChatGPT

Since the beginning of the week, the trial has been underway to determine the remedies that will put an end to Google's anti-competitive practices in the online search field. The forced sale of Chrome could be one of these solutions, which will undoubtedly interest OpenAI. The launch by the startup of ChatGPT at the end of 2022 has completely shaken up the major balances of the web, to the point that Google has thrown itself headlong into generative AI. First with the Bard bot, then with Gemini.

Duel at Distance between the AI giants

While ChatGPT is riding high in the rankings of the most used AI services, Gemini has long lagged behind. Until the end of last year, the bot and its variants had only a few tens of millions of users per month. But the number has skyrocketed since the launch of the 2.0 and 2.5 models, which have seen real progress in all areas.

During the trial, Google gave a new figure: Gemini reached 350 million monthly active users in March, and 35 million daily. There were 9 million of them every day by the end of 2024. A nice progression, then, but which still doesn't allow Gemini to reach ChatGPT's level: according to Google's web traffic measurement, OpenAI's bot has 600 million monthly active users. That's 200 million more than estimates at the beginning of the year...

Gemini therefore has roughly half as many users as ChatGPT, despite its forced integration into all Google services. A lever that OpenAI doesn't have, and despite everything, its bot still does much better. A paradox that could work in Google's favor: the company can thus argue that its dominance in search does not prevent the emergence of competitors in related fields.
