After revealing the actors who will play Albus Dumbledore, Minerva McGonagall, Severus Snape, and Rubeus Hagrid in the Harry Potter reboot series, HBO is lifting the veil on the casting of two other important characters from the first season: Argus Filch and Professor Quirrell. One of them will also be played by an actor already glimpsed in the Harry Potter films!
Harry Potter: an actor returns to Hogwarts through the front door
It's the crazy project that's got Hollywood buzzing! The Warner Bros. Discovery group has officially ordered a Harry Potter series, adapting the seven novels in J.K. Rowling's cycle. But how do you follow the film saga that enchanted millions of viewers throughout the 2000s and early 2010s? One of the first responses for Warner Bros. Discovery was to entrust the project to one of its most prestigious subsidiaries: the cable channel HBO, which has managed to establish itself as the most popular network viewers and critics.
But as much as the channel that gave us Game of Thrones, The Sopranos and The Wire is appreciated, the Harry Potter series must succeed in asserting itself in the face of the memory - inevitably nostalgic - that we have of the cinematic saga. And that obviously involves the casting! While the launch of the show is scheduled for late 2026-early 2027, HBO is gradually lifting the veil on the actors who will play our favorite wizards. But before discovering the trio of children who will play Harry, Ron, and Hermione, Warner and HBO are focusing on the teaching staff at Hogwarts School of Wizardry.
An obviously strategic choice; while the young students will likely be played by novices, experienced actors and actresses are chosen to play the adults. This is particularly the case for American actor John Lithgow, chosen for the role of Albus Dumbledore. (A choice that caused controversy, since it deviated from J.K. Rowling's wish to recruit only British actors.) The English actor of Ghanaian origin Paapa Essiedu will play Severus Snape; a recruitment that has also caused a lot of ink to flow... Finally, Janet McTeer and Nick Frost will wear the costumes of Minerva McGonagall and Rubeus Hagrid.
All these recruits have been confirmed by HBO, which took advantage of to announce that English actors Paul Whitehouse and Luke Thallon will play the roles of caretaker Argus Filch and Professor Quirinus Quirrell, respectively. In addition to both being British, the two actors seem rather well-chosen for the roles. Even funnier, Paul Whitehouse has already been seen in the Harry Potter saga. right: Paul Whitehouse (Argus Filch)
Indeed, the Welsh actor played Knight Cadogan, one of the characters in the many animated scenes of Hogwarts, in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. The scene was cut but is available on the DVD and Blu-ray bonus features. Thus, Paul Whitehouse is the first actor from the saga to officially return for the needs of the HBO series. It is unknown if other actors from the films will follow suit; We imagine that the series should offer numerous cameos to satisfy long-time fans.
And you, what do you think of these new recruits? Don't hesitate to tell us in the comments section.
