Introducing mooInk V, the first folding e-reader

Introducing mooInk V, the first folding e-reader

The foldable trend has been sweeping the smartphone market for over six years now. Until now, it had spared another type of device: e-readers. Readmoo, a Taiwanese company, is filling this gap with the mooInk V, the first e-reader to leverage this feature.

If you're wondering why it took so long for such a reader to appear, the press release provides a technical explanation: the display layer of e-paper is about four times thicker than that of a conventional OLED screen. This seriously complicates the adaptation of this technology to the folding format.

Nine years of work

Readmoo claims to have spent nine years working on the mooInk V. The result: an 8-inch color touchscreen when unfolded, capable of withstanding more than 200,000 flexes according to the company. It is based on Gallery 3 technology, already seen on other high-end color e-readers. In terms of specifications, the resolution reaches 300 dpi. The Verge actually mentions 50,000 shades of color — a value that we did not find in the official press release, however.

For context, reMarkable's Paper Pro (a digital notebook also equipped with Gallery 3) displays up to 20,000 colors, while the Kindle Colorsoft e-reader, with its Kaleido 3 screen, is limited to 4,096 colors and 150 dpi in this mode.

Getting closer to reading a paper book

In terms of design, the visuals show an e-reader whose format is reminiscent of a small paperback book. The company has not, however, revealed the precise dimensions.

Readmoo highlights two reading angles: at 180°, in a "double page" style, or at 90°; always with the desire to "make the experience close to that of a paper book". The device is particularly aimed at school books, comics and illustrated works.

Finally, the mooInk V weighs 255 grams. It is designed in a qualified aluminum-magnesium alloy "light and strong" and coated with a silver metallic paint. No release date or price has yet been announced.
