Mafia The Old Country: everything we know so far (release date, price, story, context, gameplay, etc.)

Mafia The Old Country: everything we know so far (release date, price, story, context, gameplay, etc.)

It's undoubtedly one of the biggest gaming events of the year: the return of the Mafia license. Launched in 2002 on PC with Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven, the 2K Games license has enjoyed immense success, without riding the hype, limiting itself to releasing only a relatively small number of titles. Indeed, since the first opus in 2002, only two other games have been released, with Mafia II (in 2010) and Mafia III (in 2016).

The series received a small facelift in 2020 with a remake of the first game and a remaster of the other two installments. At Gamescom 2024, 2K Games and Hangar 13 confirmed and announced the fourth installment, which will hopefully arrive this summer after almost nine years of waiting. To find out everything about this new installment in the Mafia series and to make sure you don't miss anything about this title, which promises to be quite ambitious and promising, we offer you a special report with all the information you need to know about Mafia: The Old Country. This file will of course be updated over the weeks and months until the game's release.

A little history

Mafia The Old Country: everything we know so far (release date, price, story, context, gameplay, etc.)

To date, the Mafia series has three major installments, released between 2002 and 2016. Mafia The Old Country will officially be the fourth game in the franchise.

Main Games:

  • Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven, 2002
  • Mafia II, 2010
  • Mafia III, 2016

Spin-off / remake games:

  • Mafia: The Definitive Edition, 2020
  • File creation: February 27, 2025
  • Last update: April 11, 2025

Mafia The Old Country: the sequel to Mafia III?

No, Mafia: The Old Country will not be the sequel to Mafia III, nor to another game in the license. To put it simply, it will even be a prequel, which will take place in Sicily, to show us the origins of organized crime in the early 1900s. Well before the adventures of Tommy De Angelo in Mafia (which took place between 1930 and 1938), the adventures of Vito Scaletta in Mafia II (which took place between 1945 and 1951) or the adventures of Lincoln Clay in Mafia III (which took place between 1968 and 1971).

So this is good news if you have never played the Mafia license. It will be possible to play this opus without getting lost in the story and the characters.

What is the release date of Mafia: The Old Country?

Most recent update: April 11, 2025

While 2K Games and Hangar 13 are holding a panel on May 8th for Mafia The Old Country at PAX East 2025, we learned that the game could be released on PC and consoles as early as August 8th of this year. Indeed, on the game's official page on the Spanish version of Steam, a description of the title confirmed the release of Mafia The Old Country on that date. Of course, the message was quickly deleted, but it was already too late for the Internet, which had already immortalized the information.

Mafia The Old Country: everything we know so far (release date, price, story, context, gameplay, etc.)

Announced for 2025, without further details at Gamescom, 2K Games and Hangar 13 confirmed the game's release for summer 2025 at The Game Awards. As of now, we don't have any more information on a more precise release date for the game.

What platforms will this new Mafia be released on?

The title is expected on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC. We don't yet know if it will be available on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2.

What is the price of Mafia: The Old Country?

At this time, we don't have any further information on the subject. The game should be offered at the base price of 79.99 euros in its standard version. It is not yet known if it will have a special edition and/or a collector's edition.

What will Mafia: The Old Country be about?

Mafia: The Old Country will immerse us in Sicily, in the early 1900s (probably around 1910/1915) to discover the origins of organized crime and the birth of the first mafia families. The game will take place more precisely in the city of San Celeste. This is the first time that an installment of the Mafia saga takes us outside of a fictional city inspired by an American city.

For this new installment, we will play as Enzo, a new protagonist in the saga. Enzo is a young boy whose childhood was spent working under contract in the infernal sulfur mines of Sicily. Following several events, he will have the opportunity to join Don Torrisi's crime family and will do whatever it takes to build a better life for himself. By taking the oath, Enzo has committed to upholding the Torrisi family's code of honor, with all the power and hardship that entails.

Will any characters from the Mafia franchise be featured in this new game?

For the moment, 2K Games and Hangar 13 have not commented on the matter. Generally, the main protagonists are often mentioned or even glimpsed in the various Mafia games. But, this time, it seems complicated since all the characters will probably not be born in the era where Mafia: The Old Country will take place.

We can then hope that several references will be made to Dons from the series, like Don Salieri or Don Morello (Mafia), Don Clemente or Don Vinci (Mafia II). Other cult characters like Léo Galante (Mafia II) could also be discussed. But to date, nothing has been confirmed.

Will Mafia: The Old Country be an open world?

Normally, no. The Hangar 13 teams have specified that with this fourth game, they wanted to return to the origins and not create an open world. The title will offer open areas and perhaps even a semi-open-world part, but it will not offer gameplay mechanics specific to open-worlds with side missions, random events, etc.

Hangar13 wants to avoid the sudden failure of Mafia III, which was an open-world and which was particularly disappointing. This new opus Mafia: The Old Country should generally take up the architecture of Mafia and Mafia II.

Will Mafia: The Old Country offer an online mode?

No, the game will be a single-player title, like the first three games in the license.
