Announced in June 2024 at the same time as the first Copilot+PC, the Recall function quickly revealed itself as the ugly duckling of the set of AI functions imagined by Microsoft. On paper, the idea isn't bad: helping the user get their hands on information or a document they've already seen on their computer. It could be a photo, a link, a message, etc.
The black sheep of Copilot features
Recall appears as a timeline listing screenshots taken at regular intervals. These screenshots are interpreted by handwriting recognition technology, information that is then processed by AI.
But after the feature was unveiled, security researchers identified flaws in the system, both vulnerabilities and privacy concerns. Microsoft has delayed the launch of the feature several times while it finds solutions and plugs holes.
On April 11, the publisher offered users registered with the Windows Insider program the opportunity to test the feature, called Retrouver in French. And now, it will be released to everyone through the update. April update for Windows 11. In terms of security, there has indeed been some improvement, as specialists have been able to observe. Above all, you have to activate Recall voluntarily; originally, the function was activated automatically and by default. It is also possible to remove it completely.
Finally, Recall is still quite limited. It can be used on existing Copilot+PCs, that is to say This means machines equipped with an NPU that delivers more than 40 TOPS. This limits compatible devices to PCs with a Snapdragon X Elite/Plus chip, as well as models with Intel Core Ultra 200C and AMD's Ryzen AI 300.
