For (very) long months now, the hypothesis of a NieR 3 seems more likely than ever. And this is even more the case since this year is the 15th anniversary of the franchise. "2025 will be a turning point because it marks the 15th anniversary of the NieR series, so I would like to do something on this occasion," said producer Yosuke Saito at the beginning of the year. "What should we do... maybe something related to the next game, or developments related to that... "I heard the fans' expectations," he added, leaving the door wide open for the long-awaited announcement of a sequel.
A new clue for NieR 3? It's quite possible
In addition to Yosuke Saito's statements, which are still akin to a teaser, Daniel Camilo, who writes for the Gameindustry.biz website, dropped a bombshell. In a tweet published last February, he listed games that will be revealed/announced this year. And in this shortlist is precisely a "sequel to NieR Automata". Will he be right? What is certain is that something seems to be brewing and Square Enix is really preparing to make a big announcement... like NieR 3? All hope is allowed.
Indeed, at the bottom of the web page for the 15th anniversary, we can see the strange mentions captured on video by the internet user Knoebel. Moreover, while searching, some have found references to Re[in]carnation, the free mobile game that was killed. It served as a sort of spiritual successor to Automata and RepliCant. For the moment, it's difficult to know what awaits fans of the franchise. Is this the beginning of a NieR 3? An XXL port of Re[in]carnation with greater ambitions? While waiting for an announcement, things are likely to remain unclear.
What is certain, however, is that Square Enix and PlatinumGames cannot stop there. After selling more than 9 million copies of NieR Automata, and given the franchise's aura, it's clear that the latter has a future within the publisher and the studio. Now, it remains to be seen in what form. See you at Summer Game Fest 2025 or The Game Awards 2025 for a nice surprise?
