Nintendo makes Switch 2 cartridges taste disgusting for a very specific reason, we strongly advise you not to check

The Nintendo Switch 2 arrives in France on June 5, 2025, with a much more ambitious technical sheet than that of its big sister. New processor, 120 Hz Full HD screen, integrated microphone, GameChat or even GameShare... The console is multiplying new features. But amidst the announcements, a detail has resurfaced: the game cartridges still have that foul taste. And it's not a manufacturing bug.

Nintendo has thus confirmed that this bitter taste was intentional. As with the first Switch in 2017, the Switch 2 cartridges are coated with a product with a very unpleasant taste. The idea isn't to stop people from buying them, but rather to prevent a child or pet from accidentally trying to swallow them.

Nintendo uses a foul-tasting agent to prevent Switch 2 cartridges from being swallowed by children and pets.

The substance used is called denatonium benzoate. It's a chemical agent known to be one of the most bitter in the world. It's even used in agriculture to keep animals away from crops. Its application to game cartridges can provoke an immediate reaction: anyone who tries to put them in their mouth would be automatically discouraged. Nintendo specifies that this measure does not present any health risk, but that it remains a simple way to guarantee the safety of the youngest and four-legged friends.

In parallel with this precaution, the cartridges of the Switch 2 are evolving on the technical level. They are faster to load, have a new color and some, called Game-Key Cards, no longer even contain the entire game. A choice that aims to Limit storage while adapting to the console's new software architecture. Remember that it will be sold from €469.99, or bundled with Mario Kart World for €509.99. With all that, you can do anything with these cartridges. Except eat them.
