According to several sources concordant with The Verge, OpenAI is working on a social network integrating elements from its image generator. This prototype, still very preliminary, would offer a social feed centered on visual creations produced via ChatGPT. The idea would be to encourage interactions around content generated by artificial intelligence, a way to exploit the growing popularity of viral images created by users themselves.
A prototype in gestation at OpenAI
Nothing is decided yet : the network could take the form of a standalone application, or be integrated into ChatGPT, which in March became the most downloaded application in the world. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, is currently testing the concept in a small group, asking certain external partners for their opinion on this still confidential project. Officially, OpenAI has not commented on this information.
In the background, a strategic objective is emerging: creating an in-house social feed would allow OpenAI to collect its own data in real time, a valuable asset for improving its AI models. Today, its competitors like Meta and X rely heavily on data generated by their respective platforms to train their artificial intelligence. "The fact that Grok is integrated into X makes everyone jealous," confides an employee of a competing company.
OpenAI's arrival on the social media scene would undoubtedly further electrify its already strained relationship with Elon Musk. The boss of X, who co-founded OpenAI before distancing himself from it, has proposed in February to buy the company for $97.4 billion. An offer sharply refused by Altman, who humorously retorted: "No thanks, but we can buy Twitter for $9.74 billion if you want."
This social network project would also revive competition with Meta, whose ambitions in AI are clearly visible. Mark Zuckerberg's company is planning to add a social feed to its future AI assistant. ChatGPT, which now attracts more than 400 million users each week, is already benefiting from massive craze thanks to viral trends like Ghibli-style images or "starter packs."
OpenAI therefore seems to want to capitalize on this popularity to gain a foothold in a field previously dominated by other giants. It remains to be seen whether this project will go as far as a public release or whether it will remain a simple internal experiment. But one thing is more or less certain: the company does not intend to stop at a chatbot.
