Star Wars: George Lucas Abandoned This Idea for Han Solo, Which Would Have Ruined Everything

How many ideas considered during the development of Star Wars were abandoned along the way, we may never know! There was the plan for Mustafar in Revenge of the Sith that didn't come to fruition, or these 7 really bad ideas cut from Star Wars at the last second. Today, we're talking about a (missed) opportunity to make Han Solo appear in Revenge of the Sith, fortunately abandoned by George Lucas.

In cinema, few heroes are as iconic as Han Solo Harrison Ford. In 2020, our colleagues at Empire conducted a reader survey to rank the 100 best movie characters of all time, and the galactic smuggler landed at number three. Just that... Among the ingredients that contributed to the success of the 1977 Star Wars, we can note the nonchalance, insolence, and charm of the famous Millennium Falcon pilot. So many character traits that a decision by the director with the prequel trilogy could have ruined by creating a major inconsistency. Indeed, George Lucas almost had Han Solo appear in Revenge of the Sith, which celebrates its 20th anniversary in theaters this month.

A Han Solo appearance is a source of inconsistency

Here, you will tell us that At the time of the rise of the Galactic Empire, Han Solo was still just a child, and you would be right. When developing the script, George Lucas had suggested bringing the character to life as a little boy. He would have been presented as a scruffy kid, raised by Chewbacca on his home planet, Kashyyyk. Yoda would have crossed paths with the future smuggler during a visit to this distant world, then in the middle of searching for clues to locate General Grievous. According to the website Den of Geek, the child allegedly said a single sentence to the Jedi Master:

I found part of a transmitter drone near the East Bay. I believe it is still sending and receiving signals.

With this information, Yoda could have tracked down his enemy. As you know, George Lucas eventually abandoned this idea, and thankfully so! In the original trilogy, Han Solo and Chewbacca are partners and friends, and the Wookiee being portrayed as the smuggler's "adoptive father" would have completely disrupted their relationship.
