Switch 2: The autonomy of the console will be less good than the previous Switch

Yesterday afternoon, Nintendo (finally) unveiled the Nintendo Switch 2 and allowed us to learn everything about its new console. First technical specifications, list of upcoming games, release date (June 5, 2025), price (starting at €469.99), the Switch 2 was starting to... naked while waiting to land in our hands in two months.

It is therefore thanks to the first technical characteristics displayed on the official Nintendo website, that we can discover more information about the machine's autonomy. And, for once, this remains bad news compared to the first generations of Switch.

Between 2.5 and 6.5 hours of battery life for the Switch 2

It's official, the Switch 2 should offer us between 2.5 and 6.5 hours of battery life when the latter is used in portable mode. Compared to older generations of Switch, this remains a bit weak and below the Standard Switch and the Switch OLED.

  • Nintendo Switch 2 (2025): Between 2.5h and 6.5h of battery life
  • Nintendo Switch OLED (2021): Between 4.5h and 9h of battery life
  • Nintendo Switch Lite (2019): Between 3h and 7h of battery life
  • Nintendo Switch (2017): Between 5h and 9h of battery life

On the other hand, compared to other portable consoles on the market, such as the Asus ROG Ally or the Steam Deck, Nintendo's console is doing relatively well :

  • Nintendo Switch 2 (2025): Between 2.5 and 6.5 hours of battery life
  • Asus ROG Ally X (2024): Between 2 and 3 hours
  • Asus ROG Ally (2023): On average, 1.5 hours
  • Valve Steam Deck OLED (2023): Between 2 and 8 hours of battery life

Nintendo specifies that the Switch 2 will benefit from a 5220 mAh battery. As with the various models on the previous generation, the Switch 2's battery cannot be removed. You'll need to plug your console into a power outlet or place it on its dock to recharge it.

Of course, your console's battery life will vary depending on your usage and the games you play. A Cyberpunk 2077 will consume much more than a small independent game, for example.
