Gas Price Drop
Starting May 1, 2025, French households heated by gas will see their bills decrease. The price per kilowatt hour (kWh) will drop by 6.4%, from 0.12412 euros to 0.1162 euros. For annual consumption of 11,200 kWh, you can expect a saving of 88 euros over the year. Only the subscription price remains unchanged. This lull comes after several months of successive increases, but the trend for the following months remains uncertain, as it is subject to the instability of international markets.
Increasing social assistance
As of May 5, 2025, social benefit recipients will benefit from a slight increase in their assistance, a consequence of the annual revaluation indexed to inflation. The coefficient used this year is 1.7%. A timid increase, and strongly criticized by some social actors. Concretely, this will not give you additional purchasing power, but will simply prevent you from being a total loser. Among the increased benefits, you will now have to deal with the following scales:
- Allowance for disabled adults (AAH): €1,033.32 per month
- Active solidarity income (RSA): €646.52 for a single person, €969.78 for a couple without children, €1,163.73 for a couple with one child
- Activity bonus: €633.21
Taxes: pay attention to deadlines!
May also means the tax return deadline. The latter depends on your department of residence:
- Paper declaration or French residents abroad: until May 20
- Departments 1 to 19: online declaration to be finalized before May 22, 2025
- Departments 20 to 54: until May 28
- Departments 55 to 976: until June 5
Among the notable new features, some good news: the income tax scale is being increased by 1.8% for each bracket, in order to neutralize the effect of inflation on the taxation of French households. Also, couples will now benefit from an individualized tax rate by default, unless explicitly requested otherwise. The government believes this is a way to reduce inequality within households facing significant wage disparities. Full details are available here.
Energy check: you'll have to wait
Usually sent out in the spring, the 2025 energy check will not be distributed in May this year. Due to the delay in the adoption of the finance law, the mailing has been exceptionally postponed to November 2025. This aid, between €48 and €277 Depending on income and household composition, it can be used until March 2027.
In summary
- Gas price drop: – 6.4% from May 1st
