This Switch update is a must-have: it prepares your console for the Switch 2

A little less than a month before the Switch 2 goes on sale, Nintendo is rolling out its latest update for its previous console, the original Switch. Version 20.0.0 of the console's software is anything but a trivial step or a vague collection of bug fixes. On the contrary, it prepares for the arrival of the Switch 2 with the features that link the two platforms.

The arrival of the Switch 2 on June 5 also introduces some features for its predecessor. From virtual game cards to data transfers and license management, the situation will change for Nintendo players and this will therefore not only concern the Switch 2. Thus, this update brings to the Switch and the Switch OLED the essential elements that will be shared between the new console and its two elders.
This is the case of virtual game cartridges, the new format that imitates the operation of physical cartridges. This is the new system that the Japanese firm intends to use for storing games and DLC, as well as for loans between players.

Essential compatibility features

The latest update also introduces data transfer to the Switch 1. The point? To prepare the ground again by transferring your data from the Switch 1 to the Switch 2, via the cloud without needing to have the two consoles side by side.

Another new feature available: GameShare. Very curious, this feature allows you to share a game locally between two different consoles. Be careful, however, that one or both consoles must be a Switch 2. Although integrated, this feature cannot be used before June 5.

Why should you install the latest Switch update?

The last major element is license management, undoubtedly one of the biggest recent upheavals in Nintendo's gaming policy. Indeed, this option allows you to play games you own from any compatible platform connected to the Internet. All you need to do is plug in your Switch 2 and connect it to the network.

Finally, the 20.0.0 update also includes some anecdotal features, but which have the merit of expanding the console's capabilities. Thus, we can cite, in no particular order, a new menu for managing saves or some cosmetic changes to the icons.

It is for all of these reasons that the update Switch update 20.0.0 is not a patch like the others and that is also why we strongly recommend you download it.
