WhatsApp wants to strengthen the protection of your most sensitive conversations. And to achieve this, the messaging app is implementing a new option: Advanced Chat Privacy. This can be activated on certain conversations to prevent participants who might be tempted to export it.
A new lock for sensitive conversations
To protect your conversations, WhatsApp already has several tools. The messaging app applies end-to-end encryption to all conversations, whether they are your text messages or your calls. With this encryption, only the participants in the conversation are able to access its content. WhatsApp also offers a system for ephemeral messages which, when activated, allows you to send messages that self-destruct after being read by their recipient. In addition, the messaging service also offers to lock your sensitive conversations to hide them. When this option is in place, you must authenticate yourself to access the locked conversation.
WhatsApp now wants to go even further by preventing anyone from exporting sensitive conversations. To do this, the messaging app is introducing a new option called “Privacy Advanced Chat Access. This option, which must be manually enabled within your chats or group conversations, is intended to "prevent others from extracting highly confidential content outside of WhatsApp."
In concrete terms, when this option is in place, participants in a conversation who attempt to export it will be automatically stopped in their attempt. The option also aims to prevent the automatic downloading of media (photos, videos, etc.) to other participants' phones. Thus, no element of the conversation, whether directly from the messages or from the multimedia content that has been shared, can be extracted from the discussion.
Additional security for exchanges outside your close circle
If WhatsApp has implemented this new protection system, it is mainly to protect you within the conversations that you might have with people with whom you are not necessarily very close.
The implementation of advanced confidentiality of the discussion is done in the same way as for the other protections. You will then need to access the conversation and tap on its name at the top of the screen to access its options. Then simply select Advanced Chat Privacy to activate the option.
WhatsApp specifies that this new protection is currently being rolled out and is already available to all users with the latest update of the application.
