The return of Indiana Jones to our screens has clearly marked the year 2024. The Ancient Circle, developed by MachineGames, has surprised as much as it has excited. And good news: the story seems far from over. This is a rather good sign for fans.
A success that makes you think for Indiana Jones
Phil Spencer, boss of Xbox, confided in a recent interview: Microsoft is delighted with the game's reception. Players, critics, platforms... everyone seems won over. To the point that a new installment wouldn't be out of the question. “There's still life in this franchise,” he says, without giving too much away. Enough to leave the door wide open to future Indy adventures. Even if, for the moment, nothing has been officially confirmed.
What is certain, however, is the upcoming arrival of additional content. Dubbed Indiana Jones and the Order of Giants, this DLC is expected in 2025. It is being developed by the same studio, MachineGames, which has already been praised for its respectful and original work on the base game. There's little information available yet, but expectations are high. And the Indiana Jones universe is rich enough to allow for all sorts of madness.
A faithful but modern approach
What appealed to Indiana Jones and the Ancient Circle was the deliberate choice not to turn Indy into a war machine. There are no excessive gunfights here. The game focuses on exploration, infiltration, puzzles and some good old-fashioned hand-to-hand combat. All in historically inspired environments, of course. Phil Spencer himself pointed this out: “When you play, you become Indy. And that's the game's strength.” A beautiful tribute to the spirit of the films, without falling into pastiche.
Microsoft seems determined to exploit its licenses... but also to let its studios create new stories. Spencer says he wants to encourage original creation, alongside big names like Indiana Jones. It's a way to balance nostalgia and innovation.
