Samsung is reportedly preparing a major change to its OneUI interface – including the ability to choose an assistant other than Gemini. Among the new options, Perplexity stands out from the others thanks to its generally better responses.

As the transition from Google Assistant to Gemini is complete across the Android smartphone ecosystem, a new revolution is about to take shape. Indeed, Samsung is reportedly preparing the groundwork to enable the selection of alternatives to Google's AI on Samsung Galaxy smartphones.

After Motorola, which has just landed a similar deal, the South Korean firm could enter into a partnership with Perplexity AI. An assistant that is therefore a priori on the verge of becoming a partial replacement option for Gemini (and Bixby) in Samsung smartphones. Perplexity's responses are widely described by users as more reliable than those of Google Assistant.

What might Perplexity look like on Samsung Galaxy smartphones?

However, even if this new alternative arrives, we'll still have to wait before a complete replacement for Gemini on Android devices. From what we know, launching Perplexity will require, on Motorola smartphones, for example, pressing the lock button.

The “Ok Google” or “Hey Google” voice command will remain active and will then wake up Gemini. On Samsung smartphones, we can expect the same thing. Especially since Gemini, like all Google services, is deeply rooted in the experience on the platform.

Thus, many features like Circle to Search, which allows you to launch a web search by showing the AI part of an image, should remain exclusive to Gemini. As will many other generative AI features that are scattered throughout the smartphone.

Beyond that, we can wonder to what extent Perplexity will be able to control the device's functions, such as activating the flashlight or controlling the volume. Overall, the scope of the agreements between Samsung and Google risks permanently limiting the place that other assistants could take in the user experience.

Our colleagues at Bloomberg point out, however, that the history between Samsung and Perplexity is very long, and marked by unwavering financial support for the startup from its beginnings until last year.
