100 Nm of torque, 750 W peak: Bosch launches a super-powerful e-bike motor

100 Nm of torque, 750 W peak: Bosch launches a super-powerful e-bike motor

Bosch doesn't intend to be pushed around by DJI and its Avinox motor. The German equipment manufacturer has unveiled a new version of its most powerful motor, the Performance Line CX-R. Until now limited to 85 Nm, the Performance Line CX has now reached the symbolic milestone of 100 Nm, a standard that is apparently necessary to keep up with its Chinese competitors such as Bafang, but especially DJI, whose first motor is already impressive. Bosch's response was therefore expected, and while the German manufacturer hasn't completely given in to the power race, it has nevertheless adapted.

Thus, in addition to the 100 Nm of torque displayed, we must also mention a peak power of 750 W (still 250 W nominal). Previously, this peak was capped at 600W. With 400% assistance, Bosch's new motor has a clear future: it should primarily equip electric mountain bikes. For now, the list of models to be fitted with a Performance Line CX-R is not yet known, but Mondraker has been chosen to illustrate the new motorization. However, there is no doubt that Bosch's usual partners will follow suit and that the CX-R will equip their most high-end models.

A new eMTB+ assistance mode

The new motorization is not the only new product from Bosch this spring. With its Performance Line CX-R, the equipment manufacturer is also introducing a brand new assistance mode, eMTB+, dedicated to electric mountain bikes. This is positioned between the old eMTB mode and Race mode, meaning it should be both dynamic and progressive. Moreover, the Race mode, the most customizable and the most efficient of all, is not disappearing, it will always be accessible for the most expert users.

Moreover, both of these modes can be customized with more precise assistance levels via the Bosch Flow application.

Of course, like its predecessor, The Performance Lice CX-R aims to make a difference thanks to its combination of power and progressiveness, but also thanks to its natural assistance and fine management of the engine response according to the situations encountered. Bosch repeats that its sensor system is capable of measuring pedal action up to a thousand times per second and that inertial sensors (IMU) also measure acceleration, rotation rates in six dimensions and detect slope angles as well as jolts.

The Kiox 400C in the tube

The launch of this new motorization also comes with a new display mode, the Kiox 400C. This has the particularity of being integrated into the top tube, it is therefore both easy to read and much better protected than conventional displays. Let us note in passing that Bosch here corrects one of the complaints made against its Purion 200 display, very pleasant to use certainly, but extremely exposed to shocks given its position on the handlebars.

Finally, the arrival of the Performance Line CX-R is also good news for the Performance Line CX motors already on the market. Starting in July, owners of a Performance Line CX-equipped mountain bike will be able to modify their motor's performance values. Specifically, as with the CX-R, they will be able to use the Flow app to increase the power to 750W and torque to 100Nm. This summer update will also bring eMTB+ mode to these users.
