Adidas has been the victim of a cyberattack. The German group states that an "unauthorized third party" managed to obtain personal information about its customers "through a third-party customer service provider."
Compromised contact data
Adidas declined to reveal what data was stolen by the attacker. According to the brand, passwords and credit card details were not affected by the breach. Rather, contact information, such as postal addresses and telephone numbers, was compromised. This data could be used by cybercriminals wishing to launch phishing campaigns.
Adidas also did not specify the number of victims. The statement, however, assured that all victims have contacted Adidas customer service. The group adds that it is "informing potentially affected consumers." If you have never been in contact with Adidas customer service, you should not be affected. This makes sense when you consider that it was a customer service provider that was hacked. Adidas servers are not affected.
The company, which has more than 2,000 stores worldwide, "immediately took steps to contain the incident and launched a full investigation, working with leading information security experts." Adidas remains committed "to protecting the privacy and security of our consumers", and "sincerely regrets any inconvenience or concern caused by this incident.".
A second leak for Adidas
This is not the first time that Adidas has been the victim of a computer intrusion. Seven years ago, the group's American branch was already hacked. Once again, personal data was compromised. The situation was much more worrying. At the time, the passwords of millions of consumers were stolen.
In any case, we recommend that you treat all emails or messages from Adidas with caution. Hackers could use the data to impersonate the brand. Be careful, cybercriminals could also impersonate another entity, such as another brand, to trap you.
