Android Auto will welcome two types of highly anticipated applications

Android Auto will welcome two types of highly anticipated applications

Presented at the Google I/O 2025 conference, this change marks a turning point for Android Auto. Google's car interface had previously been cautious, only allowing certain categories of applications for safety and ergonomic reasons. Now, Google is going further by opening access to functions previously deemed too sensitive or distracting for the driver.

Video and web apps for Android Auto... but with restrictions

Until now, Android Auto remained deliberately limited to navigation, communication, and music applications. After welcoming the first games in beta, Google will soon open up to video apps and web browsers. However, their use will be subject to several strict criteria.

Android Auto will welcome two types of highly anticipated applications

First, the connected smartphone will have to run Android 16. Then, only "compatible" vehicles will be able to benefit from them. Finally, as expected, these applications will only be active when the car is stationary. Google specifies that developers who have already designed adaptive applications (capable of adjusting to different screens) will quickly be able to offer a version for cars.

Weather apps now accessible to all

Another immediate change: weather apps are now officially available on Android Auto and on embedded systems with Android Automotive. This is not a revolution, as some weather services have already been present since 2023, but their publication was previously subject to manual validation by Google. Today, the conditions are becoming more flexible: any developer who respects the quality guidelines can offer a weather application.

For developers, Google still requires that the app meet certain standards for display and clarity of information so as not to interfere with driving. In short, this is excellent news for Android Auto users who will soon be able to enjoy a wider range of applications.
