A touchscreen that reveals physical controls. This is the latest innovation from LG, presented at SID in Las Vegas, the major trade show dedicated to innovative screens. The manufacturer unveiled a solution for the automobile called Stretchable: it's an extendable touchscreen installed in the center console of a vehicle. The panel can stretch up to 50%, which allows it to create spectacular deformations: in this case, a wheel and raised buttons!
A physical button in the touchscreen
The screen, even when distorted, retains its 100 dpi definition and an RGB display, comparable to that of a conventional screen. Except that physical buttons can pop out... For LG, it's the best of both worlds: it retains modern touch and the tried-and-tested physical buttons. It's true that on paper, this technology looks impressive.
However, one might question the reality of this argument. Physical buttons allow the driver to operate them without taking their eyes off the road thanks to muscle memory. No distractions possible. LG's Stretchable Display requires several interactions before the controls appear, controls that can be awkward (like those raised buttons under the dial).
LG's solution would be better suited for rear-seat passengers to control their own screens or certain comfort functions. So the idea isn't to be thrown out, but it will take a few more iterations to fully adapt to the needs of drivers.
