Apple is reportedly preparing a new app dedicated to video games

There's a bit of excitement around Apple and video games. Oh, in this very particular field, the company today is barely a shadow of what it represented in the blessed days of the Apple II! But still, we must recognize the efforts of the Apple company, which for several years has been trying to make life easier for developers with specific tools to port their games to macOS.

Apple's new offensive in video games

Relations have also warmed up with some major publishers like Capcom and Ubisoft, who have ported several of their AAA titles to Apple platforms (Resident Evil, Assassin's Creed, etc.). Probably with a little financial help from the manufacturer, because the number of users willing to buy games at "console" prices on both Mac and iPhone is probably not very high.

In any case, the iPhone's undeniable supremacy in the video game sector (and not just mobile) makes Apple a key player. Games and their in-app purchases represent the majority of the App Store's revenue.

Apple reportedly intends to strengthen its position with a future application for the iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV. According to Mark Gurman's description, it would be a launcher for games on the iPhone, which would centralize trophies, leaderboards, friends lists, etc. This would be supplemented by editorial content to discover new releases, as well as direct access to the Apple Arcade offering.

It would be a sort of App Store dedicated to games combined with Game Center, a ersatz dedicated social network that has been around in one form or another since 2010 and has never really caught on with gamers. According to the Bloomberg snooper's sources, the app won't really change Apple's perception among gamers or major publishers. We'll find out for sure during WWDC, since this app will reportedly come pre-installed with iOS 19.
