New Apple Music users switching from Spotify, Deezer, or YouTube Music can breathe easy. They'll soon no longer need to manually recreate their precious playlists. Apple has just officially unveiled a new tool designed to make it easier to migrate your library and playlists from competing music streaming platforms to Apple Music.
A transfer tool currently being tested
This new tool, the first traces of which were detected in an Apple Music beta on Android a few months ago, is now official. Apple has published a page on its online support site, detailing how it works.
That said, it appears to still be in testing for now. Apple specifies that it is currently only available in Australia and New Zealand.
To offer this new data transfer option, Apple didn't have to look very far. The Cupertino company has partnered with Songshift, an application dedicated to migrating music playlists from one platform to another.
Migration from the app or the web
The migration process proposed by Apple can be done in several ways. You can go through the Apple Music app from an iPhone, iPad, or Android smartphone, or go directly to the service's web interface from your browser.
In Apple Music's settings, a new Transfer Music option should then appear. You will then need to log in to the old streaming service before being able to select the items to transfer to Apple Music. Apple's service will then find the matches and automatically add them to your library.
If Apple Music doesn't find an exact match, the service may offer similar alternative versions for your music. You'll still need to manually validate these matches to confirm their inclusion in your Apple Music library. It won't take too long to do this, though: Apple says you have 30 days from the initial transfer to manually validate them.
While there's no word on when this feature will be rolled out more widely, there's no reason Apple won't roll it out to other countries. We'll probably have to wait a few more weeks, or even months, to see it arrive in our country.
