Is Apple TV+ on its way to becoming the platform that succeeds in everything it sets out to do? After the critical and audience successes of Silo, Ted Lasso, and Severance, the company has a new ace up its sleeve... It's even succeeding where HBO failed, to say the least. A few weeks after its launch, and while it hasn't yet delivered its conclusion, The Studio is offering a second round of episodes. Nothing surprising at first glance, the creation of Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and Peter Huyck is showered with praise. In a press release, relayed by IndieWire, Matt Cherniss is delighted to be able to continue the journey.
For their part, the creators say they are ready to continue as long as possible. “We can’t wait to bring the experience of Season 1 to Season 2, and then repeat that loop for another 10 years. We also can’t wait to keep all our friends and colleagues in the industry excited for when one of their personal stories will premiere on Apple TV+.”
Indeed, The Studio follows the new head of a struggling production company. Determined to make great films, he must confront narcissistic actors, cautious corporate executives, and marketers eager to get in his way. While this isn't the first time a series has sought to explore the behind-the-scenes workings of the film industry, The Studio has succeeded where The Franchise failed and is already establishing itself as a production that counts for the American platform.
Apple TV+, a guarantee of quality?
While the platform is struggling to establish itself in viewers' habits, it's clear that the platform is building a solid reputation with each release. This is particularly true in the science fiction world, where, despite the lack of success of Foundation, the Apple subsidiary has managed to establish itself as a destination of choice for fans of futuristic stories. It must be said that the company knows how to choose its projects, as with Silo, adapted from scholarly post-apocalyptic novels. Even with its original productions, like The Studio, but also Severance and Shrinking, Apple has had a relatively smooth run.
In June 2024, the platform boasted the highest ratings on review aggregators. However, the financial benefits of this requirement have yet to be felt. According to Nielsen Streaming data, in July 2024, Apple TV+ represented only 0.2% of viewing in the United States, compared to 8% for Netflix, for example. Faced with this situation, the time has come to cut costs. The producers of Foundation season 3 were reportedly forced to revise the scripts to reduce the bill. Recently, the series Mythic Quest was canceled due to insufficient audiences.
In the coming months, we can expect Apple TV+ to focus its efforts on its relative successes. This applies to The Studio, but also Severance and Silo. The next season of Ted Lasso is also a priority for the streaming giant, which failed to make a name for itself in theaters with Killers of the Flower Moon or Napoleon and Argylle. Apple Studios could still turn things around with F1, starring Brad Pitt. The answer will be on June 25 at the cinema to see if Joseph Kosinski's film stands out during the summer of blockbusters and if it manages to match the results of Top Gun: Maverick, Kosinski's previous film.
