After making his fortune with Microsoft, Bill Gates launched his foundation and turned to philanthropy. And clearly, he has more work than ever since the election of Donald Trump, who has tasked his government with saving money wherever possible.

In an interview with the Financial Times, Bill Gates identifies a particular enemy to his cause: Elon Musk. As head of the new Department of Government Efficiency, the Tesla, SpaceX, and Starlink executive has approved significant cuts to US aid to foreign countries. “The image of the richest man in the world killing the world’s poorest children is not a happy one,” he told the business outlet.

Bill Gates’ fortune currently stands at around US$108 billion, making him the fifth richest person in the world. He says he wants to give away US$200 billion by 2045, through his foundation and personal funds, and has set ambitious goals. During those 20 years, he hopes to eradicate deadly diseases, end the premature deaths of mothers and babies, and lift hundreds of millions of people out of extreme poverty.

Bill Gates met with Donald Trump to express his concerns about the near-complete cut in funding for the USAID (United States Agency for International Development) program. According to a study published by the scientific journal Nature, 25 million people could die over the next 15 years, due to a resurgence of diseases such as tuberculosis and HIV, or even a lack of health care and birth control due to the end of aid. The former Microsoft boss explains that his foundation will not be able to fully fill the void left by the United States government.
