Android 16 adds a welcome option for forgetful people who forget which fingerprints are on their smartphone. It's very easy to use, here's how it works.
How do you unlock your smartphone? A PIN code? A pattern? A fingerprint? The latter option is often preferred for its ease of execution, especially since the days when sensors were not very responsive are over. You can even register multiple fingers if you wish, so you can access your phone regardless of how you use it.
But maybe in the end, you notice that out of the 4 stored fingerprints, you mostly use 2. In this case, you might as well delete the others. And then you arrive in front of the list that displays “Finger 1“, “Finger 2“, “Finger 3” and “Finger 4“. Impossible to recognize them, which forces you to delete them all to start the process again. This situation will soon be nothing more than a bad memory. In the beta 1 version of Android 16 QPR1, which is full of new features, one of them is specifically for the forgetful.
Android 16 makes it easier to identify your fingerprints on smartphones, here's how
Spotted by our colleagues at Android Authority, the option couldn't be simpler to use. In Settings > Security & Privacy > Device Unlock > Easy ID & Fingerprint Unlock > Fingerprint Unlock, a “Check Enrolled Fingerprints” button appears. Tap it to reveal the sensor. Place a finger and the corresponding entry will be highlighted in the list, as you can see below.
In the screenshot, the fingerprints have been renamed by the user, which of course makes the identification function of little use. On the other hand, if you haven't taken the time to do so, it will allow you to name each one without having to delete and re-save them.
It's not something that will revolutionize your smartphone usage, but it's always appreciated that Google takes the time to develop this kind of discreet and useful addition. The stable version of Android 16 is expected sometime in June 2025. Pixels will be the first to be served.
