This year marks the 30th anniversary of Chrono Trigger. Given the aura this cult Square title enjoys, many are hoping to see a return in a modernized version. In the era of HD-2D remakes, it must be said that it's a dream come true. Fans are therefore on the lookout for any information that might point in this direction. However, faced with such excitement, the game's co-creator is forced to set the record straight when the media gets a little too carried away.
The remake of Chrono Trigger would remain only a dream
Rumors surrounding a remake of Chrono Trigger have been circulating online for quite some time. It must be said that the return of iconic Super Nintendo titles in sublime pixel art redesigns is enough to give wings to Square Enix. But time passes and still nothing for the work of Yūji Horii, Hironobu Sakaguchi and the late Akira Toriyama.
The former is precisely at the heart of all the debates concerning this famous remake. The father of Dragon Quest but also of Chrono Trigger recently made several statements that were open to interpretation, blowing hot and cold at every turn. After some understood a half-hearted admission of the project from Horii, Square Enix shared a first denial. But the matter does not end there.
Two weeks ago, Yūji Horii was invited by GameReactor for a new interview. However, it seems that the developer's translation was processed after the fact. Several comments were then reportedly replaced in the video with subtitles paraphrasing his actual words, suggesting once again that he is "starting to think" about the potential of a Chrono Trigger remake.
Except that Horii never said those words. At least, that's what GamesPark reveals. Our Japanese colleagues contacted Square Enix directly to clarify the situation. The studio dismissed any suggestion that Chrono Trigger would return::
This is a translation error regarding the Chrono Trigger remake. Horii never made such a statement. [He]doesn't even consider it.
Square Enix, for GamesPark.
No remake in sight for Chrono Trigger, then. If Square Enix's cult game were to get a remake, it wouldn't be right away in any case. This will disappoint many fans. At the same time, we imagine that Yūji Horii already has a lot on his plate with Dragon Quest 12. Maybe one day he'll return to his 1995 title, but not now.
