After many months of teasing and hints, it's now official. CD Projekt Red's Polish studio has just confirmed that Project Orion, the codename used to describe the sequel to CyberPunk 2077, has just moved to a new stage. For the first time since the release of their new franchise in December 2020, CD Projekt Red has confirmed the start of pre-production on CyberPunk 2. What does this really mean?
A CyberPunk 2077 sequel coming?
At the end of 2022, CD Projekt Red confirmed that it was working on a sequel to CyberPunk 2077 with the famous Project Orion. Until now, we hadn't had much information. In February 2025, a job offer made our mouths water, confirming that the studio was implementing a revolutionary new crowd management system. Promising us an extremely rich, vast, and dense game in terms of the inhabitants of Night City. A few days ago, during the month of May 2025, it was the creator of the CyberPunk genre who teased us some information, implying that this sequel could be entitled to two cities.
It was during their quarterly report that CD Projekt confirmed the end of the Orion project and the launch of pre-production for CyberPunk 2:
So what does this mean concretely? Does this mean that CyberPunk 2 could arrive soon? Unfortunately, not at all. You should know that the development of a video game is long with several stages. Here, the pre-production phase means that CD Projekt's teams will be able to begin the preliminary stages of development and begin to put together the first ideas and outlines of the game. It should be noted that quite a few games have had their development canceled during the pre-production phase, simply because the teams realized that the ideas weren't good after all.
Once CyberPunk 2 has completed its pre-production phase, it will enter the development phase, allowing the bulk of production to begin. Then, in the active development phase, where all CD Projekt teams will join the project. And at that point, CyberPunk 2 will become CD Projekt's main and priority project. Finally, after all this, there will be the final development phase, allowing the game to be optimized until its release. A phase that risks lasting a very long time so as not to repeat the mistakes of the first game.
So, all this takes a lot of time and therefore, do not count on this sequel before the next generation of consoles.
