Dyson Supersonic Nural Hair Dryer Review: Excellence at a Gold Price

Dyson Supersonic Nural Hair Dryer Review: Excellence at a Gold Price

Almost ten years ago, Dyson made a big splash in the smart beauty market, abandoning vacuum cleaners in favor of hair dryers. At the time, the SuperSonic was a real show of strength, almost as beautiful as it was expensive. In 2024, the Dyson Supersonic Nural is shaking things up, with a new generation of high-end hair dryers, packed with technology, and designed for the most demanding.

Design and features

The Supersonic Nural adopts the iconic silhouette of the Dyson range: a minimalist design, a balanced handle, and premium finishes that exude robustness. Apart from its new turquoise and orange color, which was already found on the latest Dyson OnTrac audio headphones, there is a minor aesthetic evolution, with the addition of a transparent front that allows a glimpse of the electronic components, to focus even more on its technical features.

In terms of ergonomics, the Supersonic Nural weighs 653 g for a height of 245 mm, which which makes it easy to handle, even during long drying sessions. The interface remains intuitive: power switch, temperature and speed settings, cold shot button, and a central light capsule that changes color depending on the selected temperature – from blue to red, including yellow and orange.

Scalp Protect, for gentle drying

The heart of the innovation behind the Nural lies in its ToF distance sensor system, capable of measuring the distance between the device and the scalp in real time. When the hair dryer approaches the head, the airflow temperature is automatically lowered to 55°C, the optimal threshold for preserving scalp health and preventing thermal damage. The central light capsule provides immediate visual feedback on the temperature: the higher the heat rises, the more the LED turns red. This new Scalp Protect technology, while not perfect when adding accessories, is particularly impressive in use.

We wouldn't expect anything less given its price, the Dyson Supersonic Neural benefits from an extremely controlled airflow. This is true in terms of temperature, but it is also true for the power of the blown air, which remains uniform in all circumstances. The result speaks for itself: the high-end hair dryer never burns, protecting the scalp of adults as well as children. An undeniable safety advantage.

When it comes to interface, you don't change a winning team. The Nural model takes the options of the original Supersonic, with four temperature levels — including a cold mode, three blower intensities, and identical controls. Simple and effective.

Lots of accessories

A sensor on the device allows it to automatically recognize its accessories, in order to adjust its heating temperature and airflow. Luckily, the Supersonic Nural comes with a full range of magnetic accessories:

  • Wide-tooth comb to detangle and sculpt thick or frizzy hair
  • Brushing concentrator for more precise straightening
  • Soft nozzle for sensitive scalps
  • Flyaway to tame unruly strands and smooth the hair surface
  • Wave+Curl diffuser to enhance natural curls or add volume from the roots

The only notable downside during our test was the recognition of certain nozzles, which was sometimes a bit tedious. Also, not all of them are compatible with the Scalp Protect function, which is a bit of a shame, especially for people with curly or frizzy hair.

Performance and user experience

The Dyson Supersonic Nural's Hyperdymium motor (1600W, 110,000 rpm) generates a powerful airflow, allowing for express drying, even on very thick or long hair. While it doesn't compromise on efficiency, the device's main feat is that it never burns you. Far from being anecdotal, Scalp Protect technology further improves the user experience on the most high-end hair dryer on the market. No more uncomfortable burns and damaged hair; use is not only much more intuitive, but also much safer. A plus for families.

In use, hair is softer, shinier, less static, and less damaged. While not the quietest of its kind, the Supersonic Nural also has the advantage of not generating excessive noise. Professionals will also appreciate the presence of a built-in accelerometer, which detects when the device is placed down. It then cuts off the heat, reduces airflow and noise, and then instantly resumes its settings as soon as you pick it up again.
