In just over a month, on June 25th, the official Formula 1 film starring Brad Pitt, Javier Bardem, and Damson Idris will be released in theaters. A few weeks before the event, Warner Bros. has released the new official trailer, allowing us to learn a little more about the film's plot.
F1: Rivalry at the Heart of the Film
When the F1 film was announced, there was reason to be quite skeptical. A true phenomenon of the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s, F1 lost its aura with the arrival of the hybrid era and the domination of Mercedes in the 2010s. We will have to wait for the arrival of the Netflix series Drive To Survive and the new regulations to give a second wind to this sport which now brings together several million spectators at each grand prix and regains its former popularity.
So, inevitably, we could fear yet another project with the sole aim: to raise money on something that is in vogue. But, visibly, it would seem that the objectives of the film are really to offer a feature film that pays tribute to the sport and the fans.
First of all, you should know that the film is produced by the producers of Top Gun: Maverick and Joseph Kosinski, director of the same film. Seven-time F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton is also listed as a producer, alongside Jerry Bruckheimer, Kosinski, Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, and Chad Oman. The film is an Apple Original Films production. For filming, the film crews traveled to real Grand Prix races and shot scenes during race weekends, involving teams and drivers to capture real racing moments. Kosinski is directing the film, with Ehren Kruger writing the script. Daniel Lupi is executive producing. F1 will star Brad Pitt, alongside Damson Idris, Kerry Condon, and Tobias Menzies. In this new trailer, we understand that Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt) was the F1 prodigy of the 90s. Following a terrible accident, he had to retire from F1 racing to become an independent driver in other disciplines.
Thirty years later, he is contacted by his former teammate Ruben Cervantes (Javier Bardem), boss of an F1 team on the verge of bankruptcy. He is counting on Sonny to save the team and show that he is still the best driver in the world. But there you have it, Sonny is no longer young and F1 remains an extremely physical sport that highlights young talents.
Facing him, he will have Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris), a very promising young driver, recruited by the team and who intends to establish himself as number 1. Sonny is quickly caught up with his past and remembers that in Formula 1, his teammate is his most formidable rival.
