Sennheiser challenges AirPods with non-noise-cancelling earbuds

Sennheiser challenges AirPods with non-noise-cancelling earbuds

"It was long believed that wearing headphones meant cutting yourself off from the world." Sennheiser wants to prove otherwise. The brand is unveiling the Accentum Open, and unlike traditional in-ear headphones, these new arrivals adopt an open design aimed at allowing users to stay connected to their environment while enjoying quality sound.

The main idea behind the Accentum Open is not to have to choose between your favorite audio content and the surrounding reality. Their non-intrusive design, without tips that insert deep into the ear canal, positions them right at the entrance of the ear. This design, back in the foreground, aims to offer clear and immersive listening while letting ambient sounds through, thus avoiding the isolating effect and potentially hearing fatigue associated with in-ear headphones. This design is particularly suitable for those who are on the move, cycling, walking, or simply want to stay aware of what is happening around them.

Accentum Open: earphones that want to be discreet

Comfort seems to be a major priority, with each earphone weighing only 4.4 grams. As for the controls, they are done via integrated touch surfaces to manage playback, volume and calls.

On the technical side, the Accentum Open are equipped with 11 mm dynamic transducers. For calls, they have two "intelligent" beamforming microphones that work to filter out ambient noise. Connectivity is provided by Bluetooth 5.3 with multipoint functionality, allowing you to connect multiple devices simultaneously (such as a smartphone and a computer) and easily switch between them.

Battery life is presented as a major selling point by the manufacturer. The earphones promise up to 6.5 hours of listening time on a single charge, and up to 28 hours in total thanks to the included charging case. In addition, a quick 10-minute charge provides an additional 1.5 hours of listening time. The feature should appeal to users in a hurry.

The Accentum Open also benefits from IPX4 certification, for increased resistance to rain or perspiration. This makes them suitable for sports activities or use in wet weather.

Price and availability

The Sennheiser Accentum Open arrives on the market at a price of 89.90 euros. They are available in two colors: deep black and powder cream.

The company has made the conscious choice not to integrate active noise reduction technology into this model. This absence is in line with the open design, but it may be surprising as it seems essential. Compared to the Accentum Open, we will notably find the Xiaomi Buds 5 and the AirPods 4 (available without ANC).
