For once, Samsung has decided to shake up the layout of its smartwatch lineup. It's quite simple: with each generation of Galaxy Watch, Samsung changes the names and the design. And the Galaxy Watch 8 should be no exception.
According to our colleagues at Android Authority, the Seoul-based company is abandoning the rounded format of its watches. Incidentally, it will release a Galaxy Watch 8 Classic, after having skipped a Galaxy Watch 7 Classic in favor of the Ultra model.
A circle in a square?
As a reminder, the term Classic in Samsung smartwatches generally refers to the addition of a rotating bezel around the dial, and therefore a round format. The rotating bezel was removed last year, which displeased some fans.
But according to documents unearthed by Android Authority, Samsung has adopted a slightly different design for the Watch 8 Classic, as well as for the base model, the Galaxy Watch 8. These are said to be inspired by the Galaxy Watch Ultra by placing a circle inside a square.
A clever way of preserving all the achievements of Wear OS and all the work accumulated by the teams on the One UI Watch interface, designed for round dials, while opting for a more modern square design, which is obviously reminiscent of the Apple Watch.
Speaking of the interface, let's remember that Samsung is preparing something big for One UI 8Watch. The new version will reportedly integrate the most notable new features of One UI 7, the Korean smartphone interface, such as the Now Bar and the Now Brief.
There is no sign, however, of a Galaxy Watch Ultra 2, which seems to be partly replaced by the Galaxy Watch 8 Classic. Yes, if you don't understand anything anymore, don't worry, neither do we. To mark the difference with the base model, in addition to the rotating bezel around the screen, Samsung would add a quick workout launch button on the Classic model, bringing it even closer to the Ultra, with the avowed aim of competing with sports watch brands like Garmin, Suunto, Coros or Amazfit.
The last point that clearly gives the impression that the Galaxy Watch 8 Classic would be an Ultra 2 with a mustache: it would integrate a vibration motor, just like the Ultra.
The Galaxy Watch 8 should be presented alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7 in July 2025.
