The May 2025 security update for Google Pixel smartphones appears to have introduced an unexpected problem: significantly higher than usual battery consumption. Several users are complaining about this, also mentioning worrying overheating. A scenario that is unfortunately not uncommon for regular users of the range.
The latest Google Pixel update is causing problems
At first glance, nothing suggested such a stir. The May update was supposed to fix some minor bugs and improve overall system stability. Yet, since its installation, dozens of messages have appeared every day on Google's support forum and on Reddit, where the very active Pixel community discusses recent issues they have encountered.
Users describe plummeting battery life and devices that feel unusually hot, even under moderate use. Some report a 10-20% battery drain in less than an hour, even without intensive phone usage or running power-hungry apps in the background.
Almost all models seem to be affected
From the Pixel 6, released in 2021, to the very recent Pixel 9, no model seems to be spared if we are to believe the reports. Some users suggest a problem linked to an active background process, possibly related to Google Play services or battery optimization management. But for the moment, no official explanation has been given. Google, for its part, has not yet commented on this wave of complaints.
This type of feedback is unfortunately not new. Pixel users have already experienced battery life issues in the days following certain monthly updates. Sometimes, the problem resolves itself after a few charge cycles, a reset, or the system optimizing new files. But in other cases, a fix is necessary.
It remains to be seen whether Google will acknowledge the issue and release a dedicated patch in the coming weeks. In the meantime, those affected can monitor background app activity, reset battery settings, or, as a last resort, roll back to a previous version if it's still possible.
