GTA 6 is undoubtedly the most anticipated game on the planet. While the whole world is waiting for the slightest bit of information, Rockstar's title still remains very mysterious. In this file, we have compiled the essential information to know about it.
This one is making itself heard! GTA 6 is without a doubt the most anticipated game on the planet. Officially announced in December 2023, fans are counting down the days until they get their hands on it.
In this article, we will list the essential things to know about this title. Concrete information, officially revealed. Release window, story, gameplay, we tell you everything. Here we go!
When will GTA 6 be released?
GTA 6 will be released on May 26, 2026.When it was announced, the title was announced for 2025. In the end, Rockstar delayed the release a little.
Which platforms will GTA 6 be released on?
GTA 6 will be released on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.So, no release on the old PS4 and Xbox One. Not a surprising fact, really. In 2026, it would be difficult to imagine a multi-generational release. Regarding the Xbox Series S's lack of power, Rockstar wants to be reassuring and says it doesn't want to sacrifice its ambitions.
Regarding the PC version, you should expect a delay. Rockstar has always prioritized a console release before working on a PC port. The latest example is Red Dead Redemption 2. Released in 2018 on PS4 and Xbox One, it arrived on PC a year later. So, don't panic, just be patient.
Where will GTA 6 take place?
Each GTA takes place in one or more American cities. GTA 4, for example, took place in Liberty City, a parody of New York, while GTA 5 took place in Los Santos, a pastiche of Los Angeles. For GTA 6, we'll travel to Vice City, a barely disguised Miami.
Fans of the saga know this city well. They already explored it in the first GTA in 1997,but especially in GTA Vice City in 2002, considered one of the best in the series.
In addition to the city, the trailer promises to explore its surroundings, the countryside, the seafronts, and even the swamps (inspired by the Everglades). In the visual below, we can see what appears to be a reproduction of the Keys, an archipelago of paradise islands located south of Miami.
A map that could be built like that of GTA 5, with a central city and surrounding countryside... but we've only seen one trailer! We could be in for some surprises. Who knows, maybe a second major city will be added to the open world?

One question remains: how will this massive environment be created? While the experience of Red Dead Redemption 2 suggests that the developers will do everything by hand, a leak suggests that they could resort to procedural generation. A choice that will undoubtedly divide fans, if confirmed.
What will the story of GTA 6 be?
For now, story details are scant. For this aspect, we can only rely on the trailer. We will follow the adventures of two characters: Jason and Lucia. A couple of losers who make a living from small-time robberies. At one point, Lucia is arrested and thrown in prison. The game seems to begin with her being released on parole (as evidenced by the electronic bracelet). This will not prevent her from sinking again... Lucia's presence is a small revolution in a saga that was then rather male-dominated. While it was possible to play as women in GTA 1, this was no longer the case. It remains to be seen how this duo's management will translate into gameplay. Will we be able to switch between them like in GTA 5? This is not specified for the moment.
There is a third important character in the trailer... the city of Vice City!Once again, Rockstar has had a field day parodying American life and its excesses, offering us a satirical vision of the excesses of Miami, but also of the lost countryside losing its bearings. In short, the universe is a character in its own right.
GTA 6: the first game to break the €80 barrier?
The question of the price of a video game is less central than that of a smartphone. Prices are indeed very similar from one title to another, but this could change. In his State of Gaming 2025 report, researcher Matthew Ball explains that GTA 6 could be the first game to retail for $100 in its base version on PS5 and Xbox Series X. This isn't so surprising when you consider that Take-Two was the first publisher to break the bank by releasing NBA 2K21 for €80 in 2021.
Will GTA 6 reach 60 fps on consoles?
Rockstar hasn't yet officially announced what performance we can expect from GTA 6. But a former animator at the studio, who participated in the development of GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 and is therefore familiar with the developers' working methods, has some ideas on the matter. According to Mike York, GTA 6 could offer a consistent frame rate of 30 fps on home consoles. The priority would be to never fall below 30 fps, rather than aiming for 60 fps.
Thanks to PSSR (Playstation Spectral Super Resolution) technology, the PS5 Pro could be better off than the PS5 and Xbox Series, without however guaranteeing the famous constant 60 fps. To play GTA 6 in 60 fps, we would therefore have to wait for the PC version of the game.
Other things to know, in bulk
The GTA 6 trailer gives us some clues to understand what awaits us, without giving too much away. The first thing we notice is that the streets of Vice City are teeming with life. There are people everywhere, on the beach, in the streets, in the nightclubs and even in the countryside! Next to it, GTA 5's Los Santos looks deserted.
We also notice anumber of Instagram-inspired shots. While GTA 5 was already taking a toll on social media (Facebook and Twitter at the time), GTA 6 seems to be taking its toll even further. From there to imagining that Insta lives will be an integral part of the gameplay, it's only a small step.
Heists also seem to be making a comeback. Logical, given that Jason and Lucia... are robbers. These were highlights in the previous game and we hope they will be as intense and well-staged in this installment.
In bulk, we also note the presence of animals, dogs, flamingos and even alligators. Various vehicles, such as planes and hovercrafts, appear in the video and should be drivable.
Nightclubs also seem to play a big part in the game, as do street races reminiscent of Fast and Furious.
Now we just have to wait for more information. With the game not expected for several months, we have plenty of time to see what's coming.
But how was GTA born?
GTA is now one of the most important licenses, if not THE license, in video games. However, the first installment wasn't supposed to look like what we know, at the beginning. Indeed, at the base, GTA was supposed to be a game where you play in turns the police and the robbers.

It's the mid-1990s. Dave Jones, founder of the DMA Design studio, had a small success with his title Lemmings. He was then working on his new project: Race'n'Chase, a title where you play the police and the gangsters. The big feature of the prototype? Its 3D cities, very large and very realistic for the time.
He presented his project to the Houser brothers, who managed the publisher BMG Interactive, and they were thrilled. So he continued working on his baby but quickly faced a major problem: playing police officers... it was boring. He then decided to completely revise his concept. We will only play the bandits! GTA was born.
The first installment was released in 1997, and despite a mixed critical reception, the title made waves for its innovative concept and deliberately provocative marketing campaign. In 2001, DMA Design, renamed Rockstar North, changed the gaming landscape with GTA 3 on PS2. The key to its success? Its vibrant 3D world and its well-crafted storyline. It was with this title that GTA truly became the phenomenon it is today.
