Half-Life 3 Leaked Again, Fans Might Be Disappointed

For the past few months, we've finally been able to dream that Half-Life 3, or at least a new game in the legendary FPS franchise, should be coming soon. Valve's next game is said to be at a very advanced stage of development and undergoing significant playtesting. After the excellent VR-exclusive Half-Life Alyx, however, it's possible that the mad scientists at Black Mesa might not be to everyone's taste, according to a revelation from a generally well-informed insider about Gabe Newell's company.

A Half-Life 3 out of phase more than twenty years after the second opus?

For several months now, we've been hearing about a game in development in Valve's labs, codenamed HLX. Many clues point to the infamous Half-Life 3, which we haven't expected to see for years, as Valve seems to be struggling to count to three. Whatever the name of this next game, it should target more conventional platforms like PC and consoles, and not VR like the masterful Alyx. In terms of new features, we can expect procedural world generation and complex interactions with NPCs. Finally, it should be a real Half-Life 3, which would conclude the crazy story of Gordon Freeman.

However, according to GabeFollower, a very reputable insider when it comes to all things Valve, it could be that fans don't like the "story hook" of this new installment of the legendary franchise. At least, that's what he suggested on a Tyler stream, spotted by user Evol-Chan on Reddit. The insider apparently received feedback to this effect following Valve's rigorous playtesting of Half-Life 3.

As a reminder, the second installment left us on a heartbreaking cliffhanger regarding Alyx's family, with Gordon Freeman and Alyx left behind after a tragic loss. If this is indeed Half-Life 3, will we be treated to a kind of ellipse, with no further connection to the second installment and its two episodes? For now, we can't be categorical on this subject. However, we could have some answers very soon, as Half-Life 3 could finally emerge from the shadows at the upcoming Summer Game Fest 2025 in early June.
