HBO is developing a new adaptation of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series. The project is controversial following the controversy sparked by the British writer regarding her comments against the transgender community. One of the new actors chosen to play Dumbledore has just reacted to the comments made by the young wizard's mother.
J.K. Rowling, the target of transgender advocates
For several years now, J.K. Rowling, to whom we owe the magical world of Harry Potter, has been the subject of much discussion, and not in a positive way. Indeed, the British writer is pointed at by those who support the cause of the trans community because of her anti-transgender activism. She regularly provokes strong reactions on social media. Recently, it was after a decision by the United Kingdom Supreme Court that established the legal definition of a woman that she rejoiced on her X account. Rowling posed with a cigar in her mouth and a cocktail in her hand, welcoming the institution for agreeing with her.
While she will be heavily involved in the upcoming Harry Potter series, HBO attempted to reassure fans who are unhappy with her presence in the project due to her statements and opinions. The American network explained that J.K. Rowling has every right to her own way of thinking and that this will not influence the series, which will always remain focused on the magic of the original story. And to remind everyone that it was unthinkable not to include her in the production.
John Lithgow, the new Dumbledore, addresses the question of J.K. Rowling
Recently, the first names of the cast of the Harry Potter series were revealed. Among them, John Lithgow, the actor who will take on the role of Albus Dumbledore. In an interview with Sky News, he addressed the subject of Rowling. The LGBT community is concerned about the possible success of the series, which could offer greater visibility to the author of the saga. Many are trying to get the series canceled. A friend of Lithgow's, the mother of a transgender child, even asked him to step down from his role as Dumbledore. He refused.
For the new actor playing the Hogwarts headmaster, the anti-trans issue and Rowling's comments are topics he is regularly asked. Aware of the controversy, he explained:
J.K. Rowling has created a wonderful collection of children's books. I have my own opinion on the subject. But I certainly won't hesitate to speak out about it. And if I have to speak out on this subject, I will do so from within and in close collaboration with J.K. Rowling.
While Lithgow is not opposed to collaborating with the author, this does not seem to be the case for Paapa Essiedu, the new Snape, who recently signed a letter supporting the rights of transgender people.
The Harry Potter series is due to begin filming this summer and the first season is normally scheduled for 2027.
