HBO is preparing a new TV series adaptation of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter book and film saga. The controversial British author, who has been deemed transphobic, is heavily involved in the production of the series. This doesn't sit well with activists who support the transgender community. Some actors have already reacted to the controversies caused, the latest being Warwick Davis who wanted to address the interest of a reboot of the saga in series and to react to the writer's comments.
HBO's Harry Potter series begins to unfold
The new adaptation of Harry Potter on HBO is expected on television in 2026. This format will allow the story of J.K. Rowling's saga to unfold over several seasons and will offer fans more details than what the film adaptations carried by Daniel Radcliffe offered to fans.
Currently in production, the Harry Potter series, which has a comfortable budget of $200 million, was recently revealed in early concept art, giving us a glimpse of the atmosphere, which seems to be faithful to the universe imagined by J.K. Rowling. Moreover, the latter serves as a producer, and for some transgender advocates, that doesn't work. Indeed, the British writer has been the subject of numerous controversies following her transphobic comments. The latest was sparked by a photo of Rowling celebrating a decision by the UK Supreme Court to exclude trans women from the legal definition of "woman."
Her post on her account sparked a reaction from actor Pedro Pascal and also Nicola Coughlan, the actress from the series Bridgerton, who is very committed to the transgender cause. She even said: "Keep your new Harry Potter. I wouldn't touch it even with a 20-foot pole."
For his part, John Lithgow, the new actor playing Dumbledore in the HBO series, reacted to Rowling's comments, explaining that he had his own opinion on the matter and that if he had to speak out on the subject he would do so "from within and in close collaboration with J.K. Rowling."
Warwick Davis Shares His Perspective on the Harry Potter Series
After Sean Biggerstaff, who played Olivier Dubois in the cinema, it's the turn of Warwick Davis, Professor Flitwick, to speak out about the new adaptation of Harry Potter and the controversies sparked by the writer. Interviewed by Entertainment Weekly, the actor said he was happy at the idea of a future TV series dedicated to the young wizard:
I love the Harry Potter stories and the whole concept that it represents. Seeing a new version of this story can only be a good thing.
As for J.K. Rowling's question, Warwick said he was unaware of the controversies because he doesn't follow the news and stressed: "it's not really something that interests me; my job is to produce entertainment."
