iPhone, iPad, Mac… Apple threatens to make wireless connections much better than the competition

iPhones, iPads, and Macs should soon benefit from much better Wi-Fi connections, especially when traveling. A feature is coming to synchronize the connection to captive portals such as the connection in hotels, train stations, and airports.

iPhone, iPad, Mac… Apple threatens to make wireless connections much better than the competition

With the widespread use of wireless, you have probably encountered a recurring problem when traveling. While their presence is very convenient, public hotspots actually work a little differently than your home Wi-Fi connection. When you select the network, a page appears – and you then have to enter the same information on each of your devices before you can access the internet.

However, something new is coming, at least for Apple products. According to information from Mark Gurman, a journalist at Bloomberg specializing in the company's products, Apple is preparing to add a very useful feature to improve Wi-Fi connectivity throughout its ecosystem. Indeed, with iOS 19, as soon as you connect to a captive portal, the connection data will be automatically synchronized across all your other devices.

Apple has a rather good idea for improving the Wi-Fi of your devices

As a result, you will be able to immediately enjoy the internet on your Mac and all the other devices you carry with you. Although the technical details of this option are unknown at this stage, it's safe to assume that connecting your devices beforehand won't be necessary.

Indeed, it's already possible to share the WiFi connection key between two iPhones/iPads or between an iPhone and a Mac simply by bringing the two devices together. This works even if the second device isn't connected to the internet. Apple uses proprietary technology for this, which appears to be derived from the AirDrop protocol.

This gives us hope that the new feature won't rely on a hardware modality exclusive to the latest generations of iPhones, like the iPhone 17, which the company is also expected to unveil. The wait shouldn't be very long to find out more, in any case. The iOS 19 beta, which is expected to offer this feature, is expected to be launched at the start of the WWDC 2025 developer conference. See you on June 9.
