Jony Ive and Sam Altman have partially lifted the veil on the mysterious project they've been working on for months. The company behind it is called io. It was founded by the former Apple designer, and OpenAI has just acquired it for the modest sum of $6.5 billion.
The two men published a long video on YouTube to discuss their ambition, without really giving any details about the product currently in development. TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is doing it for them.
Jony Ive and Sam Altman are reportedly working on a neck-wearable product
Ming-Chi Kuo is generally very well informed about Apple news and the tech world in general. The specialist provides some details about the mysterious product developed by Sam Altman and Jony Ive. It would be a device similar in format to an iPod shuffle. It would be worn around the neck.
"It will be equipped with cameras and microphones for environmental detection, but will not have a display function. It should connect to smartphones and PCs, using their computing and display capabilities," says Ming-Chi Kuo on X. Of course, the device should benefit from artificial intelligence to offer innovative functions.
A few weeks ago, The Information reported that the product in development was a screenless smartphone. According to Ming-Chi Kuo, this is not the case. The specialist expects mass production of the device to begin in 2027 for a market release later that year.
For its part, the Wall Street Journal is even more optimistic and expects a release as early as the end of 2026. The American media explains that the product is a small companion for everyday use and capable of fitting in a pocket or on a desk.
"I hope we can bring back some of the fun, wonder, and creative spirit I first felt using an Apple computer 30 years ago," says Jony Ive in the video shared by OpenAI's YouTube channel. Sam Altman describes their creation as "the coolest piece of technology the world has ever seen."
If you're eager to see what these two tech minds are up to, you'll have to be patient a little longer.
