Besides Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, Kingdom Hearts has easily established itself in the pantheon of the most beloved JRPGs. The blend of Square's touch with the Disney universe has won over millions of players, now fans of Tetsuya Nomura's convoluted storylines. The father of the saga has a pronounced penchant for wacky stories that require watching a recap and an explanation of all the games to understand all the ins and outs. And every episode counts, even those on mobile, which systematically prove crucial between each numbered episode. The teams had planned a whole new part of the story before the arrival of Kingdom Hearts 4, but bad news came.
The next Kingdom Hearts game is canceled
Before the arrival of KH4, Square Enix had prepared a little appetizer with Missing Link, a mobile episode that took up some mechanics from Pokemon Go and others. An episode that could have seemed anecdotal on paper, but fans were eager to discover it especially for its story, which was supposed to be important for Kingdom Hearts 4 and the rest of the saga. Unfortunately, after several postponements, the axe fell: the game is purely and simply canceled. "We have made the difficult decision to stop the development of Kingdom Hearts Missing Link. We would like to offer our sincere apologies to those who were waiting for its arrival," Square Enix explains in its official statement.
The reasons for the cancellation of Kingdom Hearts Missing Link are simple: the studio failed to create a satisfying enough experience to keep players on the edge of their seats for a long period of time, despite several adjustments and iterations. The decision was then made to cancel the game, which will ultimately live up to its name. It now remains to be seen what will become of the narrative arc it was supposed to bring. As a reminder, this episode was supposed to introduce a new wielder of the Scala ad Caelum Keyblade, all in a time never before explored in the franchise.
Knowing Nomura, the story should have served to bring some new narrative elements and theories, but that will not be the case. Don't panic, however, for Kingdom Hearts 4, it is still on track. "The Kingdom Hearts series will continue. We are working hard on KH4 and we hope you will continue to support the saga,” concludes Square Enix. The publisher promises that news will be given later, which could be this summer or in a year or more.
