Marvel: A film about this cult comic book superhero team is reportedly in the works

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is constantly evolving. Since its debut in 2008 with Iron Man, the MCU has been in full swing. A social phenomenon that has been losing momentum since the end of the Infinity Saga, which could soon reconcile fans with Marvel productions. Phase VI of the MCU begins this year with Fantastic Four: Beginning, while the sequel is in development. And according to an insider, a film about a team of cult superheroes from comics is in development.

A team of villains to take on the Avengers at Marvel?

Kevin Feige, the bigwig at the head of Marvel Studios, is constantly imagining the next films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. To create a coherent and exciting universe, everything must be planned years in advance. But problems are piling up for the MCU, and the enthusiasm for superhero films is no longer the same as in the past. However, Deadpool and Wolverine proved that fans were ready to return to the cinema.

The MCU is not dead, but its Phase VI will allow us to better understand its future. Quality over quantity, an initiative that has struggled to take root in the minds of those who make the decisions. Yet, release after release, and in almost all sectors, the reactions are the same. And soon, the MCU will be making a big play by bringing Robert Downey Jr. back to the screen. His cult character, Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, died in Avengers: Endgame.

But with the magic of the Multiverse, Marvel can afford to bring him back to the screen and tie him back into the story. Is that a good idea? It's hard to say. Besides RDJ's Doctor Doom, another threat is reportedly approaching the Avengers, a team of superheroes well-known to comic book fans. That team is none other than the Annihilators. According to Daniel Richtman, Marvel Studios is reportedly developing a film featuring the Annihilators, slated to join Black Panther 3 and the X-Men reboot for the next saga.

The Annihilators could be connected to Chris Pratt's Star-Lord, as TheCosmic Circus hinted, explaining that Star-Lord formed the Annihilators after returning to Earth and leaving his cosmic team behind after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.It's still possible that Marvel's plans have changed over the years. It's not surprising to see the name Annihilators resurface, the team was one of the 24 projects that Marvel Studios was said to have secretly in the works.

According to no major developments on the film since, a project for which the rumors were possibly false, or that the plans have changed. But given the success of the teams (the Avengers, the Guardians of the Galaxy, the Thunderbolts*), it wouldn't be surprising if Marvel tried to apply the same recipe to another team. A team formed in 2011 by Cosmo to fulfill his late friend Star-Lord's dream of assembling a team to stop threats before intergalactic dangers arose.

In the comics, the Annihilators team included The Silver Surfer, Beta Ray Bill, Ikon, Gladiator, Quasar, and Ronan the Accuser. But it's possible that its composition could evolve to include other characters. And since the principle of the Annihilators in Marvel Comics was to prevent threats before they threatened the entire universe, it's possible that it would come into play with the arrival of Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars.
