Alfred Hitchcock famously said that "the better the villain, the better the film." The British director, known as the master of suspense, was obviously right, but his adage also applies to Japanese animation and manga. After looking at the best Japanese animation soundtracks, we wanted to pay tribute to the industry's most charismatic and memorable villains. Meet twelve antagonists who are by turns powerful, intelligent, sadistic, manipulative, calculating, and magnetic!
#12 Kariya Kagetoki (Samurai Champloo)
Although he only appears in the last three episodes of Samurai Champloo—the other masterpiece by Shin'ichirō Watanabe (the father of Cowboy Bebop)—Kariya Kagetoki has left a deep impression on viewers. Nicknamed "the Hand of God," he is an outstanding fighter who has never lost a single sword fight. Having put away his weapons to tend to his garden, he nevertheless accepts the mission of killing Seizo Kasumi, the Samurai who smells of Sunflower, whom Fuu, Mugen, and Jin are looking for. Calm and ruthless, he refuses to spare the sick warrior's life, despite his daughter's pleas.
#11 Light Yagami (Death Note)
The main character of the manga Death Note, Light Yagami applies his profoundly nihilistic philosophy by eliminating all the criminals whose names he writes in his notebook. Blessed with exceptional intelligence, he is also cold, calculating and manipulative, he manages to become a key element of the investigative unit charged with investigating his own crimes. His rivalry with Detective L forms one of the peaks of the detective genre. The intellectual and strategic battle he wages against his adversary, and then against his two heirs (M and Near), make him one of the most memorable and charismatic villains in the history of manga and Japanese animation.
#10 Ryōmen Sukuna (Jujutsu Kaisen)
Nicknamed the King of Plagues, Ryōmen Sukuna is the main antagonist of the mangaJujutsu Kaisen by Gege Akutami, adapted into an animated series by the MAPPA studio. Endowed with immense power and an unparalleled mastery of the exorcist arts, he is a quasi-divine figure, fascinating and terrifying. Aware of his supremacy, he possesses imposing charisma and exceptional strategic intelligence. His cruel actions are executed with a nonchalance that makes them even more shocking in the eyes of the public. Nihilistic and contemptuous of moral conventions, he is a symbol of absolute and destructive freedom. Sukuna remains the real attraction of Jujutsu Kaisen and he steals every scene in which he appears. His duel against Satoru Gojo, who rivaled him in terms of both power and arrogance, remains one of the manga's highlights, and we can't wait to see it adapted into the anime series.
#9 Hisoka (Hunter x Hunter)
The iconic antagonist of Yoshihiro Togashi's masterpiece, Hisoka is a fascinating character. His eccentric personality and clownish clothing style contrast with his danger and cruelty. This duality helps make Hisoka a villain who is both unpredictable and frightening. Motivated solely by his obsession with the thrill of dueling, he has a morality that is ambiguous, to say the least; not hesitating to kill those he considers too weak or unworthy of him, he can collaborate with and protect protagonists who he judges could become adversaries capable of providing him with exciting duels.
Askeladd, the cunning and manipulative leader of a Viking mercenary group, is a fan-favorite character from the Vinland Saga. Combining charisma, strategic intelligence, and combat skill, he also has a mysterious past. Capable of unnerving even his enemies with his magnetism, Askeladd is an immensely complex character, marked by his fierce hatred of the Danes and his tortured loyalty to his Celtic roots. While capable of cruel deeds, he is also a man who does not deny his honor; a duality that makes him unpredictable and fascinating. His relationship with Thorfinn, whom he manipulates while teaching him survival skills, and his sacrifice to protect Wales, cement his image as an unforgettable villain, whose writing is enhanced by a welcome redemption.
#7 Dio Brando (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure)
Introduced in the Phantom Blood installment, Dio Brando is the first antagonist of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure manga and anime. Embodying all-consuming ambition and boundless cruelty, Dio is a formidable opponent who transforms every confrontation into a theatrical spectacle. Manipulative and arrogant, he uses his remarkable intelligence to further his quest for power. His Stand, The World, which allows him to stop time, perfectly reflects his obsession with absolute domination. Marked by his tragic past and his intense rivalry with Jonathan Joestar, Dio fascinates viewers with his grandiloquent speeches. A memorable villain, for sure! From now on, the threats are no longer terrestrial, but instead come from space. In order to resurrect the Saiyans' victims, the Z-Warriors travel to Namek where they will confront the galactic tyrant Frieza. Often considered the best arc in Akira Toriyama's work, the Namek arc offered the greatest antagonist in the manga and anime. As powerful as he is cruel, the son of King Cold embodies such overwhelming power that he pushes Son Goku to transform into a Super Saiyan for the first time, after killing Krillin. His design and voice reinforce his aura of a sadistic and arrogant tyrant, both in the Japanese version and in the Japanese version. Despite his defeat on Namek and his death on Earth, Frieza will return several times, ever more powerful and threatening.
#5 Eren Jäger (Attack on Titan)
The main character of Attack on Titan, the young Eren Jäger is an absolutely fascinating character. Initially presented as humanity's only hope against the threat of the Titans, he becomes the main antagonist of the manga and anime after the discovery of Marley and the fate reserved for the Eldians. With a visceral hatred for his oppressors, Eren Jäger is willing to sacrifice his reputation and humanity by triggering the Great Shaking, which killed millions of people. Eren Jäger's psychological evolution is accompanied by a physical and behavioral transformation. During season 4, he grew his hair and shows a disturbing resolve and calm, a far cry from the rage that drove him during childhood and adolescence. He has also become a shrewd strategist. In short, Eren Jäger is more than a villain; He is a fascinating character with a tragic destiny who will be talked about for a very long time.
#4 Madara Uchiha (Naruto)
Legendary ninja, Madara Uchiha is the co-founder of the hidden village of Konoha alongside his rival Hashirama Senju. Sharing an ideal of peace with the First Hokage, Madara and Hasirama failed to agree on how to achieve this utopia and ended up fighting. Left for dead, he managed to survive thanks to his rival's DNA and obtained the Rinnegan. Working in the shadows until his disappearance, he manipulated Obito Uchiha, who resurrected him during the Fourth Great Ninja War. Blessed with exceptional power, he single-handedly managed to put the Grand Alliance army in difficulty. It would take the return of the first four Hokage and the reunion of Team 7 to turn the tide of battle. Although he is ultimately not the main antagonist of the manga - the title goes to Kaguya Ōtsutsuki -, he is nonetheless the most memorable and exciting!
#3 Johan Liebert (Monster)
The manga Monster by Naoki Urasawa and its adaptation by the Madhouse studio have made a huge impact on both the general public and critics. While the success of the work owes much to the immense talent of Urasawa as a screenwriter and illustrator - who has become the undisputed master of the Japanese thriller -, the character of Johan Liebert is undeniably one of the main driving forces behind its aura. Saved as a child by Dr. Kenzō Tenma after being shot in the head, Johann Liebert is a true monster. His angelic face hides a highly intelligent and charismatic assassin, a sociopath with immense manipulative abilities, fascinated by destruction. A true Devil!
#2 Vicious (Cowboy Bebop)
First appearing in the memorable fifth episode of Cowboy Bebop, Vicious is the main antagonist of Shin'ichirō Watanabe's masterpiece. His suit, piercing gaze, and deep voice all contribute to his undeniable, intimidating aura, but it's his actions that are more chilling. Consumed by hatred and jealousy for Spike Spiegel over a love triangle, he has become both cruel and ruthless, willing to sacrifice his allies to get what he wants. His relationship with Spike is far more complex than it seems; they are two sides of the same coin. While Spike runs from his past and struggles to move on, his rival remains trapped within it. This makes their final confrontation even more tragic! Although he only appears in five episodes, Vicious is undoubtedly one of the most memorable and charismatic villain characters in Japanese animation!
#1 Griffith (Berserk)
The main antagonist of Kentarō Miura's Berserk manga, Griffith was the charismatic leader of the Falcon Troop, a mercenary group that Guts joined in his youth and through which he met Casca. Blessed with an exceptional aura that allows him to win the support of men and women who would be ready to give their lives for him, Griffith is also a formidable fighter and strategist. However, consumed by a consuming ambition, he sacrificed all his loved ones on the altar of his goals during the Eclipse, a deeply traumatic episode for readers and viewers of Berserk. Since this event, which psychologically destroyed Casca and physically injured Guts, the latter has been hunting Griffith for revenge. Kentarō Miura's genius is to have blurred the lines between Good and Evil; for if Griffith is undeniably the antagonist of the manga and anime, he is also a benefactor who created a utopia protecting the inhabitants from monsters. A character of great complexity!
