Netflix's Star Wars is already dead

Netflix's Star Wars is already dead

It was destined for monstrous success, it was meant to rival George Lucas's imagination... but it must already surrender. In the early 2000s, Zack Snyder knocked on Lucasfilm's door with a brilliant idea. He wanted to bring his own installment of the saga to life. He had just signed Army of the Dead and had not yet delivered his epic 300. He would do so a year later. Without the success of the Spartan adventures in his pocket, Snyder was turned down. He would try his luck again when Lucasfilm joined the Disney conglomerate in 2012. Once again, the big-eared company was not keen. It was actively working on developing a new trilogy.

Regardless, Snyder already had a lot to do with the DC universe, which he had to bring to life (with the result we know). We will have to wait for the release of Army of the Dead on Netflix in 2021 for things to finally move in the right direction for the director. The success of the zombie feature film will allow the director to set foot and realize his dream of making a film inspired by Seven Samurai and Star Wars. Sofia Boutella has been recruited to take the lead role. She will play Kora, an inhabitant of the moon Veldt sent to meet fighters and rebels to defend her planet from imperial troops. Child of Fire is released on Netflix in December 2023 and Netflix does not hesitate to compare its proposal with Disney's billion-dollar license.

The Cold Shower

Widely promoted as the end-of-year event in the N rouge catalog, Rebel Moon: Child of Fire disappoints. In its first three days, the film only attracted 23.9 million viewers worldwide. In the ranking of films released on a Friday on the streaming service, it only came in tenth place, behind Your Place or Mine and The Killer. A cold shower for the production, which hoped to rival the adventures of the Skywalker family. Proof, if any were needed, of the public's certain disinterest in Kora's adventures, Rebel Moon did not make it into the ranking of the most-watched films in the platform's history.

The second installment fared no better, just like the extended versions released a few months later. Rebel Moon was a flop, but the platform had never yet decided on the future of the franchise. Snyder and author Kurt Johnstad had, however, the ambition to devote at least six installments to this saga. A guest on the podcast I Minutemen, the screenwriter finally gives some news. It's not good. He explains that unless a miracle happens, viewers convinced by the proposal will be left wanting more.

Johnstad half-heartedly confirms that the future is rather bleak for the saga, which is not among the streaming giant's priorities. Its $166 million budget and disastrous audience figures haven't convinced the company to stick with it. Rather than a sequel, Netflix is banking on a game for its platform. Blood Line: A Rebel Moon Game is currently in beta and stands out as the last bastion of a competitor to Star Wars that has failed to create a surprise. Zack Snyder is already focusing on new worlds and films, starting with an action film about the LA police that he is writing in collaboration with Kurt Johnstad.
