Some gamers don't like to waste time. While the official release of the Nintendo Switch 2 is scheduled for next week, images of the console are already circulating online, raising many questions on social media. The cause is a short eight-second video posted on YouTube by a user named a2dubai, showing what appears to be a real unboxing of the machine.
In the video, we see a box placed next to a first-generation Switch. The user opens it to reveal a screen and two Joy-Cons wrapped in plastic. These few seconds of video don't seem to offend anyone, and yet they imply a lot: some people already have the console in their hands, more than a week before its official release. A hypothesis confirmed by other testimonies relayed in particular by the famous insider Wario64, according to which units of the Switch 2 were delivered in advance to certain buyers.
He claimed on X (formerly Twitter) that another person had shared images of his own Switch 2 with him. While he was unable to publish the photos in question, he confirmed that the console refuses to launch a game without being connected to Nintendo's servers, with an on-screen message explicitly requesting a system update. Information confirmed by a2dubai, which states:
Unusable until June 5?
Despite this leak, and the possibility that players have managed to get their hands on the console (legally or illegally, no one knows yet), Nintendo has planned ahead. It seems impossible for the moment to fully enjoy the machine. When trying to launch a game from the current Switch on the Switch 2, a screen would prompt you to connect to the internet to perform a system update.
According to sources at The Game Business, this day-one update is one of the reasons why Nintendo would not allow media and content creators to test the console before its release. A radically different strategy from previous launches, and one that seems aimed at preventing any gameplay leaks before the big day.
The video has since been removed, presumably following a copyright infringement report. But one thing is certain: this leak, even partial, only fuels curiosity about the Switch 2. See you on June 5th to find out for sure and finally discover what the console really has in store. In the meantime, you can read our preview.
