No iOS 19 this year, Apple will go straight to… iOS 26!

Like every year, Apple users and developers are expecting the big annual updates to the manufacturer's operating systems to arrive at WWDC, which begins on June 9. But this year, the flavor of the presentation may be a little unusual. Firstly, because Apple reportedly intends to thoroughly overhaul the interfaces of its operating systems in order to gain consistency and unify its different platforms under a common design language.

Unify the platforms

But the big change could be something else entirely. Mark Gurman reports that the manufacturer will completely change the numbering system for its operating systems! While everyone had bet, quite logically, on iOS 19, Apple would like to shake things up and replace the version number with the year — not 2025, but 2026, like new car ranges or football games.

The different versions of Apple's OS can cause a bit of confusion among uninitiated users. We have iOS 18, watchOS 12, macOS 15 and visionOS 2!

So this year we would have: iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS 26, watchOS 26, tvOS 26 and visionOS 26. We will see if Apple will still keep the annual nickname for macOS, inspired by a Californian place: Ventura (macOS 13), Sonoma (macOS 14), Sequoia (macOS 15)… But perhaps in its desire to unify its platforms, the apple company will have decided to bury this tradition.
