12 million users use the Parisian public transport network lines every day. To ensure the smooth coexistence of all and the sustainability of the infrastructure, the RATP regulations are clear: each user must ensure the cleanliness of the trains and stations, as well as respect the rules of civility. While in April, a passenger from Yvelines complained of having been fined for having her feet on a seat, we are taking stock of what is and is not allowed.
Feet on seats: €60
It is strictly forbidden to deliberately soil the equipment, whether through litter, stains, or by placing one's feet on the seats. These behaviors, considered acts of incivility, are subject to increased surveillance by RATP agents. From forgetting luggage to simply placing a foot on a seat, the wallets of careless users can quickly suffer in the event of incivility.
Thus, feet, even clean ones on seats, are considered "dirt", and liable to a fine of €60 on the spot, but can rise to €375 in the event of deferred payment. Among the penalties detailed on the official website of the Ile-de-France transport network, we also find:
- Taking the wrong direction in a controlled zone: €25 if the fine is paid immediately, €55 if it is paid within 20 days, and €75 thereafter
- Forgetting or depositing an object: €150 on site, €180 within 20 days
- Disturbing the peace (speaking loudly, listening to music without headphones): €60 on site, up to €375 in the event of non-payment
- Obstructing boarding or alighting, irregular boarding or alighting: €150
- Obviously drunk: €150
- Smoking or vaping: €68 to €135 depending on the severity
- Taking Viewing or recording without authorization: €150
- Begging, distributing leaflets, using sound instruments without authorization: €150
Since 2025, the legislation has become stricter. Repeated or serious incivility can now be reclassified as offenses, and repeat offenders can be subject to fines of up to €7,500 and six months of imprisonment in the most extreme cases. Recently, a woman was fined for carrying a plant deemed too large on the metro. To travel with peace of mind, it's best to know and respect these basic rules - otherwise your journey will end up being much more expensive than expected.
