Oops, the title of the next Mario movie has been leaked (but no one is surprised)

It will undoubtedly be the cinematic event of 2026. Three years after the undisputed success of Super Mario Bros. The Movie, Universal Pictures promises to bring back the Nintendo character for new adventures. The animated film is particularly mysterious, with only its release date known.

At least, that's what the studio hoped before publishing a press release that gave a little too much away. The document, spotted by The Verge, lifts the veil on the title of this new proposal. Proof, if proof were needed, that this announcement was rushed, the press release has since been updated to no longer include this sensitive information.

In Another World

So it's no longer a secret, Super Mario Bros. 2 will be called Super Mario World. An obvious choice, as the first feature film laid the foundations for a lucrative license for Nintendo and Universal Pictures. Now it's time for the character to see the world. The title obviously recalls the video game, released in 1990 in Japan. The game followed the plumber as he tried to save Peach from another kidnapping by Bowser. At the same time, he had to help the inhabitants of Dinosaur Island at the hands of the antagonist and his loyal Koopalings.

This choice to take on the plot of the first installment of the saga is not the most surprising, since the most famous resident of Dinosaur Island made an appearance in the post-credits scene of the first film. It was indeed Yoshi, coming out of his shell, who concluded the first adventures of Mario and Luigi. The little green character is one of the most popular among gamers, and Universal Pictures was not going to hold back from entrusting him to the party and undoubtedly selling a lot of merchandise bearing his image.

Given the images presented in the 2023 film, an egg was inadvertently transported into the real world. It is undoubtedly while trying to bring this little dinosaur back to his family that Mario and Luigi will have the unpleasant encounter with Bowser. A new world to save? Nothing to scare the valiant heroes who break bricks.

The date is set for April 1, 2026 in France. Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic are directing from a screenplay written by Matthew Fogel. To try to replicate the $1.3 billion miracle, Universal is banking on the same team as in 2023. We can also hope that the impressive French-speaking voice cast, which made waves on the international scene, will return to bring Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Bowser to life. We can also expect some catchy new music.
