As the season of big video game announcements is fast approaching, a new rumor is rekindling speculation about Sony's intentions for summer 2025. Is a PlayStation Showcase on the agenda? According to well-informed journalist Jeff Grubb, the Japanese company is still hesitating over the form its summer communication will take.
A PlayStation Showcase to unveil the next creations?
It was during a video exchange on the "Jeff Grubb's Game Mess" channel relayed on social networks that Jeff Grubb shared some interesting information about internal discussions at Sony. According to him, the company is in deep thought: should it organize a large PlayStation Showcase or settle for a new State of Play, a shorter and more focused format?
Internally, it seems that they [Sony] are torn between organizing a real showcase this summer or simply another State of Play. But they are seriously considering this initiative. And if a PlayStation showcase takes place, it means they will have a lot to say.
This hesitation comes at a time when Sony's communication strategy seems more discreet in recent months. Unlike its competitors, notably Microsoft and Nintendo, who have made numerous statements at the beginning of the year, PlayStation has been less vocal. This is fueling the expectations of gamers and observers, who are hoping for an event rich in announcements. A PlayStation Showcase would be a good sign for gamers.
Two formats, two different signs for the public
A proper PlayStation Showcase would allow Sony to make an impression, notably by revealing its plans for the end of the PS5 generation, or by lifting the veil on anticipated titles like Marvel's Wolverine or by showing in detail the next exclusives like Ghost of Yōtei or Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.
Conversely, the State of Play format, often used to highlight a game or a handful of upcoming projects, could be suitable for more measured communication. This type of show, generally less than 30 minutes long, is simpler to produce and allows for a regular rhythm without revealing too many cards at once. For the moment, Sony has not made anything official.
