Prime Video had bet everything on this series, which was supposed to last for many years, but it will finally end after its third season.

Prime Video just canceled another show everyone loves and no one understands why.

A blow for fans: there will be no fourth season of The Wheel of Time. Not on Prime Video, anyway, as Amazon has decided to prematurely end its fantasy series. The final episode of season 3 aired on April 17, concluding the small-screen adventures of Moraine, Rand, Nynaeve, and their companions. In all likelihood, the series will not be picked up by another broadcaster.

Amazon reportedly hesitated for a long time before making this decision, reports Deadline. Executives were receptive to the creative and artistic proposition of The Wheel of Time, but its budget got the better of the series, which was too expensive to produce. It also competed with The Rings of Power, another high-end fantasy series available on Prime Video, which has the advantage of being set in the Lord of the Rings universe.

The Wheel of Time Stops Turning

At the time, the streaming platform had bet big on The Wheel of Time, aiming to make it a Game of Thrones-style success. But the series didn't really succeed. The launch of season 1 was strong, helped by a very aggressive advertising campaign from Amazon to promote it. But then, the audience dwindled, remaining quite decent, but not high enough to justify so much investment.

The critical reception of the series only improved season after season, while the pace of the plot began to accelerate. But this wasn't enough to captivate viewers in the long term. Those who hung on and wanted more can console themselves with a season 3 finale that was written with the idea that there wouldn't necessarily be a season 4, limiting subscriber frustration.

Prime Video will now turn to other projects, such as adapting Mass Effect into a series, or even a live-action God of War show.
